I've been running Forefox 1.5 very happily, and 1.5.0.2 installs automatically and crashes. I close Firefox and try to uninstall, but the Firefox kernel won't disnegage. I have to reboot to uninstall it and go back to 1.5. The next time I restart Firefox, version 1.5.0.2 installs itself and crashes.

I searched through my Mozilla Firefox folder and I have 1.0.7, unless mine is messed up.
I honestly don't know where the 1.5.0.2 is coming from. Sorry, can't help you. You might need to update.
Personallly, I find Opera is a better browser. Loading and searching is a lot faster, but doesn't have all the extras like Firefox.
Good luck with fixing the problem.

I converted to Opera. I miss some of the FF plugins but otherwise it's a much faster browser.

One possibility: Try removing it via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, reboot, then reinstall the new version.
If that doesn't work, suggest you start here, at the Firefox support pages: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=38. One of the claims to fame of FF is the support you get from the 'user community'. I wouldn't hesitate to jump in and ask.
P.S: Saw this after posting original message. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes. Take note of the standard diagnostic at the bottom.

Start in safe mode, then update your extensions. Oddly for something tagged as a minor maintenance release, 1.5.0.2 broke three extensions I use, for which only one had an update available.

I am using this it to type this and have had no problems since I loaded it. I find it curious that you seem to indicate that it loads itself. I am sure that you could turn that off.

If 1.5.0.1 -> 1.5.0.2 broke extensions, that's news to me. The interface didn't change. Which extensions are you talking about? There's a lot of extensions out there that do weird stuff. Maybe you're using some of them. I only use 2 fairly vanilla extensions and a simple theme.
The plugin interface changed between 1.0 and 1.5. The first time you upgrade to 1.5.anything, you'll hit the plugin problem. FF and t-bird will tell you if it needs to disable any old plugins. Most plugins have 1.5 versions now. The one that kept me waiting was the calendar extension. The beta version they have listed works fine.
To the OP, disconnect temporarily from the internet, and restart/reinstall 1.5 or whatever older version you want to use. Then go to tools/options. Select the advanced pane on top, then select the 'update' pane. Click on "ask me what I want to do" under "When updates for firefox are found". (the other choice is to download and install them automatically. Apparently you must have selected that option at some point.) After that, reconnect to the internet. Now it won't do the auto upgrade thing, it will ask you what you want to do.
I've had zero problems going from 1.5.0.1 to 1.5.0.2. I have 2 ff extensions installed, fasterfox and flashblock, plus the talkback extxtension that came with it, plus the greymodern theme. (I use the calendar extension with t-bird.) In fact, 1.5.0.1 -> 1.5.0.2 was about the easiest upgrade I've ever done (click yes, let it do it's thing, and then it restarts the browser and you're done. The download was pretty small. It wasn't a complete reinstall.)

Ditto for me, running XP Pro on a Thinkpad.

Yes the download of 1.5.0.2 happened automatically as well as the installation itself, quite smooth.
In my case I was tired of Firefox crashing by itself... and sending the info to Microsoft - as if they care. This version seems to be much more stable.
No crashes so far. I'm a happy camper.

It's on my work machine, but IIRC the installer told me it had disabled HTML Validator, Quick Locale Switcher, and MeasureIt.
HTML Validator was updated on Feb 6 to version 0.7.9 and claims it supports 1.5.0.x. Do you have the latest version?
There's a 1.3.4 version of Quick Locale Switcher that was release on April 6. Did you have that version, or maybe you need an update? It does say it supports 1.5.0.x
MeasureIt also says it supports ff 1.5.0.x. (Updated in Dec 05).
Anyway this is all pretty odd. Are you sure you didn't upgrade from 1.0.x to 1.5.0.x? The symptoms of ff disabling plugins is precisely what happens when you upgrade to 1.5.x the first time.

After reading the disaster stories about 1.5, I have stuck with 1.07. Perfect and stable.

I downgraded to 1.5.0.1 and turnedoff the automatic installation of upgrades under:
tools>options>advanced>update (tab) >"Ask me what I want to do"
I'm back to 1.5.0.1 with all my extension working fine.
The only problem I'm still having is Adobe files won't load, and crash FF.

This could be what happened with me previously... my FF would crash when I dealt with PDF...
Regardless, currently with the new version it seems great. I've been opening and shutting down PDFs and it won't crash anymore - perhaps you should give it a try.

Are you running Reader 7.0? Perhaps you could try not loading the PDFs within the FF browser.

No problem with 1.5.0.2 on three computers here, but like others said, I would check your extensions.

Personally, I detest it when pdf files open inside the browser, so I turn that off. I want a full view that excludes the browsers tool bars, etc.
Here's how (for acrobat reader 7.0):
Open acrobat reader.
Go to edit/preferences
Select "internet" on the left hand column.
Make sure "Display PDF in browser" is not checked.
Hit ok.
Now when you click on a pdf link, it will open in acrobat reader outside the browser. (The only annoying thing is depending on how the site does the link, you sometimes end up with an extra browser window, but it's easy enough to dismiss it.)
Earlier versions of acrobat reader had a similar preference item, so it should be easy to find.
If, on the other hand, you want them to open inside the browser, I would turn off the preference, make sure you have the latest reader installed, (upgrade if necessary, 7.x is better than earlier versions) then turn it back on and see if it works. If that doesn't work, you might completely uninstall acrobat reader and start over. It could be a problem with the plugin/extension, but for most people it works fine. Turning off the preference should remove the extension. If that doesn't work we can probably remove the extension manually, but try all this first.

Totally spot on. I do the same things. Reader 7 seems to have fixed the awful mess that Reader 6 was. It was better to skip 6 and go from 5 to 7.
I often get that extra browser window when opening PDFs outside the broswer with FF. Does anyone know why?

1.5.0.2 is a mess for me. It seems to be dying on several web sites, not just PDF files. But I don't have time to uninstall/reinstall right now, so I'm going to bet on 1.5.0.3 coming out in the next week or two.

Same here, installs automatically - but it works fine.
Have this now:

The link is set up to open in a new window. (I think an ampersand does that.)
If you were reading PDF inside the browser, the pdf file would open in that new window. Since we're not doing that, we unfortunately still get the new window, and then the pdf opens in acrobat reader, which gets its own window.
