Free seats are still available for holidays / Fewer restrictions on using mileage
Frequent fliers can usually forget about redeeming miles for tickets over the holidays. But major U.S. airlines questioned last week said free seats are still up for grabs.
"You -won't find one on the evening of Dec. 23 or to a city with a bowl game, but there are markets out there with seats available," said US Airways spokesman David Castelveter.
Asked if American still had frequent-flier redemption seats over the holidays, spokesman Dale Morris said, "Absolutely." Northwest has "a great number" of awards seats for overseas trips and some domestic routes, said spokesman Kurt Ebenhoch.
Most airlines have blackout dates when no free tickets are available - generally Dec. 21, 22 and 30. And Dec. 23 is a peak day for paying customers, so there are fewer frequent-flier seats available.
Popular warm-weather destinations - Florida, California and Arizona - have the fewest available free seats. And the most? Hub cities of individual airlines.
