Travel Technology - Mac OS X misbehaving a little with manipulated images

A rather odd thing happens with Mac OS X. An acquaintance of mine sent me a manipulated image but when I am browsing through my folders and it shows the preview of the image beside the folder. However instead of showing the image I received by email, the manipulated version, it shows the unphotoshopped version which I never received!

Seems odd that it can do this...perhaps something to do with the way the image was manipulated.

I took a screenshot if that would make more sense, but since it reveals confidential details I'd rather not!

Thanks
Fraser

Thumbnails are not simply live-reduced versions of the current image. In WinXP at least, the thumbnail is an independent image and can easily get out of sync with the base image. There's a context menu selection in Windows explorer to refresh the thumbnail image for when this happens.

I know you're describing something you're seeing in OS X, but I bet it works the same as what I see in XP.

What format is the image in? Normally I'd guess it's a bad thumb, but if he mailed you the image, then OSX generated the thumb from the photoshopped image you were sent. My guess is it's still in psd format, or something similar to that, and is using a thumb that was generated by PS, as opposed to one generated on the fly by the os.

The image was sent as a .jpg file.

Was the image specifically manipulated by Adobe Photoshop, or did you use "unphotoshopped" as a generic term? When you crop an image in JPEGView, it saves the original image plus the cropping info. The preview is still based on the original. If you open the cropped photo in another app, say Preview, you'll get the uncropped version. Only JPEGView interprets the cropping data. So the answer to the question depends on the specific apps you and your friend are using.
