Am I right in thinking if I buy a W class on A/C it is not eligible for miles, but if I buy a W class on BMI (codeshared with A/C on A/C metal), I will earn 1x miles? This makes no sense at all especially when the BMI fare is considerably cheaper than the A/C fare!?!

Yes, that is correct. You only earn miles with BD W class.

What doesn't make sense is that W class on Air Canada is used for Economy Awards.
Where are you buying this ticket from ?

You can't buy W class on AC, I believe what is he is asking is if he buys a W from bmi, but flies on AC, he will earn miles.

OK sorry I didn't understand. W can be purchased on BMI, I didn't see what class of travel it was on A/C if it is cheapest economy is it likely to gain 1x miles?

As posted above, W is the AC economy award booking class.

diamond club awards miles based on the accrual rates of the operating carrier. If you buy a W-class BD codeshare on AC metal, you will not get miles.

that assumes that the W fare sold by BD is a W fare on AC metal. Sometimes, that is not always the case. I recently purchased an S fare from US that included portions on UA metal -- turned out to be K and L class for those segments. All were mileage-accruing.. but you just never know, I guess.

Exactly, which is not the case.

IIRC BD's W class is/was equivalent to AC's L class.

Well, who can ever tell with BD. I don't have experience with this combination, but I have used AC-coded, BD-metal tickets in the past. AC L class has always mapped to BD Q on the boarding pass, but still credited at 150/200%...
