Yes...insert Windows XP CD into the machine, and select full install (not upgrade).
Do a google search - there are a TON of info on the web on how to do this.

Can you give us the specs of the machine? It may not be possible to upgrade it to XP but that'll depend on what it has (processor, memory, disk space). As it's a Win2K machine it's more likely it'll work than were it a Win98 machine.

Portables are trickier because they tend to use more propiertary drivers than do many desktops. You may be successful in getting a "generic" XP install to go through, but then you'll discover some hardware (video, network, audio are typical) will need specific drivers and unless IBM has provided them for your specific model you will not be able to use the system.
As mentioned above, be sure not to select "upgrade", do a full install and include a full format of the drive (usually) "C". At the initial selection screen I generally delete all OS partitions and start from scratch on the install. Of course be sure you've backed up any data files you need - all programs will need to be reinstalled after the OS.

Can you boot from the Windows CD? Format C: once you've booted from the CD.
What error message, etc. are you getting when "nothing works"?

Probably too late for you now and don't know what you paid, but you can purchase the cheaper "Windows XP Professional - Upgrade" package and upgrade from your current Windows 2000 Professional.
Though I have no idea if you can do a clean install using the Upgrade package. You might have to leave 2000 Pro on your machine and upgrade from it.

I would leave an older machine on Win 2k unless there was some application I needed that required XP. XP will be slower. Noticeably slower.

Thanks. Do you have any idea if this is possible when XP came bundled as part of your computer purchase and you don't have an actual Microsoft XP CD...just the OEM version that's on the computer manufacturer's Restore Disc?

Yes it's possible. The XP CD looks for the cab files, so if it came bundled it should find those cab files on the laptop.

Thanks! Gotta friend that has 2000 Pro and his collage is offering XP Pro Upgrade for only $79. He wants to upgrade. I'll let him know it may be possible.
