Travel Technology - MiniDV Tapes and travel??? X-rays?

Hi Friends,
A colleague and I are travelling to Romania to produce a Documentary. We have stock of about 30 tapes still wrapped in bulk. Last time I travelled to Bucharest I filmed with my little Canon ZR-300 which also uses MiniDV tapes. I dont see any degredation on any video I shot but my tape stock was limited to 3 tapes all of which was "carry on" for all portions of travel. I have a couple of questions and I leave the day after tomorrow.

1, Does it make a difference where I pack my tapes for travel?
Carryon VS Checked Luggage?
After I film and we are travelling on the way back would my luggage be subjected to any further electronic screening other then if I were to "carry on" items?

2, With the entire amount of tapes we will shoot in Romania would it be wiser to keep the entire stock in "carry on" (with us at all times) rather then checked luggage on the way back? The chances of our luggage getting lost and never found or perhaps "losing" a few tapes in transit on the way back
would be very bad.
I do have faith in Lufthansa and I dont think I would lose any luggage nor have any accidently lost(left behind after screening). I'm doing LAX-MUC-OTP same on the way back, very direct.

We are fortunate that the most expensive gear we have (the pro camera and such) fits in a carry on so my colleague is using his carry on for that.
That leaves me free to carry on stuff for the both of us. My little Canon MiniDV cam is small and I may carry that on as well.

On the way back I can carry the 30+ tapes we have in my carry on. 30 MiniDV tapes is not really huge and we may even pick up another 10-20. We bought them in bulk from a film distributor and got a fantastic deal so tape cost is not an issue but we dont want to have to buy and shoot on different tapestock if we run out.

Thanks for any input you can give me.
Tom

IIRC, miniDV tapes are magnetic media-if so, don't worry about X-ray
That said, with tapes of such value, I would carry them on. Side benefit is that if you are worrying about X-ray radiation, dose for carry-ons is MUCH less

Keep in mind there is a hypothetical threat from X-ray machines to magnetic media. These machines do produce a magnetic field when functioning and could cause a degradation of the tapes. Much safer to have them hand inspected if possible, otherwise do as carry-on. The carry-on x-rays are usually less powerful than the checked baggage x-ray.

As the previous poster said, anything of value should be taken on board as carry on, never checked and out of your possession.
