Am I the only one who finds this a little odd?

"In Gomes' case, an Island Air passenger flying from Moloka'i to Honolulu reported to TSA on Feb. 8 that an envelope containing $16,000 in cash that was stuffed into a backpack and sealed in a cooler was missing, according to the complaint."

And other passengers with $1000 of Yen -- who are these idiots that keep cash in checked luggage????

And why would ANYONE be carrying $16,000 in cash? Hmmm???? Drugs? Guns? Nothing legal! :)

I think the carrying of rather large amounts of money on ones person is mandatory for Japanese people. They shop at a an almost unimaginable level. As for the $16k, that does seem stupid to carry around. That doesn't mean the TSA should take it. I hate those .......s. One of them stole a shirt of mine and a beer mug once. And a TSA-approved lock. How could anyone possibly think they would get away with stealing that much money. Idiot.

If someone is carrying $16,000 or even more within US borders, it is no one's goddamn business why they are doing so.

Comrade Daschle told us he wanted 'professionals'. I guess he didn't really specify what kind of 'professionals' he was going to put on Workfare.

Just so we've got an accurate body count... This isn't bad -- one scumbag a week.

Gomes, a screener, was terminated from his job on Tuesday, the TSA said. He is the third TSA screener to be charged with felony theft by federal authorities this month.

On March 3, Benny Arcano and Christopher Cadorna were charged in a complaint with felony theft for allegedly stealing yen valued at more than $1,000 from the suitcases of Japanese tourists during 2004 and 2005.

With this kind of intellectual capacity, I'm sure the TSA gave Gomes a hefty signing bonus when he applied for a job:

Special Agent Keith Edwards of the TSA Office of Inspection and Investigations learned that Gomes was the only screener assigned to search checked baggage at the time the passenger checked his luggage in on Moloka'i.

...and the beat goes on...

Agreed, it is no one's business. Stupidity is not a crime.

Actually, if the people with the large amounts of money are foreign tourists they have had to declare to US Customs that they are bringing in the money. Which would lead to their being required to deal an explanation and taxes....And if they did not declare it...

Hello!

That declaration has to be made when entering the country, not when traveling within it!

Moreover, only US Customs should be enforcing this law, and only at the border.
