So I check in at NY Times Square Hilton tonight ater a very long day. At check in they ask-- "would you like breakfast in the morninig or 1000 bonus points?"
I took the points - Are any other Hiltons offering this promotion?-- Is this new?

I believe this is just part of the HHonors My Way (VIP Hotel Benefit Preferences) option. As an HHonors Gold or Diamond, one is now allowed the option to receive bonus HHonors points in lieu of the normal elite perk.

The choices/points offered depends on the brand of property one is staying at. In the case of Hiltons, one can choose to receive 1000 bonus HHonors points instead of the breakfast (and/or room upgrade/lounge access).

I sure hope you didn't trade away the upgrade and lounge access for the 1000 HHonors points.
(Edited to add: Actually, if you're checking in late anyway and just for one night, leaving breakfast as the only remaining viable elite perk, maybe the 1000 HHonors points were the way to go.)

From the Hilton My Way selection page (Account options):
You may choose between any of the options as indicated below. You have up to two hours prior to check-in to make your VIP benefit selection for your stay. Please note that VIP hotel benefit preferences are only available for HHonors Gold and Diamond VIP members staying at participating hotels.

HiltonŽ

*Upgrade to Executive Floor (if available), OR Executive Floor Lounge access (if the hotel has a Lounge), OR complimentary continental breakfast for the member and one guest each day of the stay. If the rate already includes breakfast, a special food and beverage amenity will be presented.

*1,000 HHonors bonus points

The wonder of FT with everyone's different takes on perks. :)

To expand on the Edited to add, I could care less about the "upgrade" or lounge access as both are normally very lame and therefore not worth it in my opinion. As the breakfast is so bad most of the time, I'll take points please. ^

Likewise, if you're a points scrounger, some on a company account might elect to take the 1000 points, and charge bfast to the room for the extra base points. :td: ^ :td: ^

if you are on company business your status has nothing to do with the company.

so paying executive floor from the beginning and getting the 1000 points would be the correct procedure.

You can change your earnings preferences as often as you like. If I know I will be arriving late and missing the evening appetizers, I'll jump online and switch to the points. Then I can use per diem on breakfast and get even more points.

Does the change always go through? Seems to me I've read that sometimes requested changes don't "take" on the website.

The length of stay and the quality of the breakfast are two factors that can be considered. For a one night stay, breakfast "costs" 1000 points, for a five night stay, each breakfast would be 200 points.

I suppose location of the dining room could be a factor as well - will I have to smell the bacon and eggs as I leave the hotel!

I do not second that. I am responsible for a large team of high professionals traveling a lot. My Firm has paid the bills for their status and if I were approached with an argument like this I would have to think about the future relationship.

T. ^ Your argument is incorrectly based on a corporate travel view, not individual economic unit travel which it should. Of course corporate costs should be mitigated but won't do to this conflict. The only way for a business to address this is either not to or micro manage it which would be much more trouble then it would be worth.

I was offered this at DT in Tampa a few weeks back. I took the 1000 points since breakfast can be expensed. Good thing I did, the breakfast ended up being terrible and the points were a great deal...

If you have an early morning flight and going to miss breakfast anyways, the points are also a great deal...

Many company travelers and all federal government travelers get a fixed dollar amount for meals, so getting free breakfast (if you actually want it) may be the better deal.

And in certain jurisdictions - like Germany - the breakfast will we regulary on your own account if you do not have a room rate incl. breakfast (if the room rate is incl. breakfast only your tax free allowance - which is peanuts anyway - is reduced).

But to be honest: As said before, from a corporate view I do not fancy an approach like "take the points and charge breakfast to the company". My company's money is my partners and my money and we treat it like our own money.

Cheers

Yes thats my situation, and while 1000 points seems nice paying for a $10+ breakfast is not worth the 1000 points.

Now at a Homewood or a Embessy Suites I will take the extra points because their perks are generally lame.

I found that even before we had the My Way option, that the NY Times Square Hilton gave you the same option.

I'm a points scrounger & will always go for the points, when given a choice, as I've done when I've stayed at that hotel.
