Hard to believe a $17 self-parking charge at the Doubletree Modesto and Hampton Fresno. Room rates aren't inexpensive either. Can anyone shed some light on availability of nearby free street parking on Saturday night and Sunday morning, including any security issues?

Thx.

I wouldn't park on the street in either city, crime rates are rather high. If you can get secured parking go for it, else park near the front of the hotel and with lights around. Either way make sure you remove all of your possessions from the car.

There is a fairly large parking garage right across the street from the DT Modesto. I do recall having to pay to use it when I stayed there for a night last July, but I don't recall it being a $17 charge, either.

Unless something dramatic has changed since January, there is no parking charge in Fresno. The lot is wide open, and decent sized.

Every commericial building complex in the area around the FAT-Hampton has an open lot. While one in theory could park on the street just west of the Hampton, there is a ton of construction going on, and space would be limited.

As to rates in Fresno, yes they are high for the neighborhood. However the hotel is full almost every weeknight. I had to use a Diamond force there, four times last year.

Thanks for the rapid responses. I just booked both properties at the HHonors website, and a $17 self-parking charge is indicated for both ($20 valet).

Due to the feedback above, I just phoned both properties. Sure enough, the Hampton has no parking charge, and the Doubletree Modesto is also free for overnight guest self-parking and $11 for valet ("the safest choice" according to the front desk).

It appears that the HHonors website has a default message in the booking confirmation form for many (all?) properties stating the above parking charges. I told both hotels they should contact HHonors or doubletree.com or whoever to have that message removed as it could discourage business.

Once again FT helps to resolve an issue.

I think Hilton.com has a big-time bug on this one. I've seen this 17/20 parking charge on a lot of hotels I've been booking for my next 2 months of trips today. When I call the properties they think I'm nuts.

Don't rely on valet parking at the Modesto Doubletree for a secure parking place. They'll park your car across the street in an unattended multi-level municipal parking structure. The OP was right, both the Fresno and Modesto properties are located in high crime areas.

Unless something changed since last week there is no charge at the Hampton in Fresno. I was there for the last week and a half and they didn't even ask if I had a car. Wide open parking lot. Never been to the one in Modesto.

Although I haven't parked a car overnight at the Fresno Hampton, it is located just across the freeway from Fresno's newest upscale shopping area, RiverPark,
http://www.fresnobee.com/images/shopping/galleries/riverpark/index.html
and near the Kaiser Medical Center.
Shouldn't be any different than parking in any larger city, if you take common sense precautions.

And before someone else comments about crime in Fresno, let's see. Fresno came in right between San Diego and Seattle in 2004 for auto theft, and has been dropping for a number of years. It is still too high but much improved. Murder rate in Fresno actually runs lower per capita than San Francisco.
