Delta SkyMiles (Pre-WorldPerks Merger) - Half the plane lost baggage!

Last night I flew MOB-ATL-PHF. Once arriving in PHF and waiting at the luggage carousel for 20 minutes, the announcement comes over that all bags have been offloaded and no more are coming. I along with at least 40 other people made my way to the ticket counter to file a claim for my lost baggage. Seeing as this was a CRJ700 aircraft, it was at least half the plane that had lost baggage. Several people commented that they had no connection and had checked in plenty early for the flight in ATL. Any thoughts on what could cause such a massive screw up? (by the way my connection time was approx. 45 minutes.)

It's entirely possible that the rampies loaded those bags on another flight by mistake, or left a cart behind. It happens, and I have first hand knowledge of BOTH situations. IOW, I've seen it with my own two eyes.
Good to see you around ;)
And with an airport the size of ATL, accidents do happen.

Maybe DL is just trying to keep up their low standrads as having one of the worst baggage records. That is what happens when you treat your employess like _______!
I would say that another US Skyteam carrier does it more than DL, which still has quite good morale for the most part across the employee base..

...with an airport the size of ATL, accidents do happen.
To preserve semantic rigor, let us not call a predictable event an 'accident'. Happens all the time in ATL.
Somehow the airport's baggage handlers cannot get more than 50% of the bags transferred, even with over an hour in which to do it.
A propos, has anybody seen the size of the 'Baggage Customer Service' line in ATL?
I wonder who has to pay the cost of delivering these bags later; the union, the airport where the bags were 'detained', or the airline?

A porpos, has anybody seen the size of the 'Baggage Customer Service' line in ATL?What is a porpos?
No entry found for Porpos.
Did you mean Porpus?

Sorry, my hasty typing. I meant a propos.
Or this could have meant that the aircraft was porpoising, causing the luggage to be thrown about, making it too hard for the baggage handlers union to remove ;)
PortalGuy:
There are no union baggage handlers at DL.

I have had this happen a few times over the years... bad baggage days do happen. What matters is how it is handled! Sometimes DL has been great, other times they acted like it was my fault I was flying on DL. I actually find that ASA handles lost baggage better then DL stations (when it is an ASA only station.) This may be the only thing ASA does better then DL.

inagaddadavida,
Your seeing the glass as half empty, remember almost half of the flight received their checked bags. Delta should be applauded for getting almost half of the people their bags. Oh wait some people are like me and usually don't check bags (travel light). I am sure that some folks on that flight did not check bags. But still, Delta did get some bags to the final destination. So the glass is partially full right?

I'm betting on a full cart of luggage sitting on the ramp at ATL.
Did you get your luggage today? Did you find out what happened?

got my luggage late last night. I went to the airport to get it (only a couple miles). Had a voicemail from Delta earlier in the day saying they needed to get in touch with me before they could deliver it, asked me to call back, but didn't leave a number. I didn't bother asking the agent what caused the delay...figured she'd probably been harassed with that question enough already.
