For the past several years I have departed from ZRH after skiing in Austria. Since the morning trains get in too late for the connection, I have spent the last night at an airport hotel (The Renaissance in Glattbrug) via priceline. I have bid $70 for a double room, and have been placed there each time. The shuttle runs every half hour, and it is only a few minutes. They run a free shuttle into ZRH until late at night, so you can get rid of your rental car upon arrival, one less thing to do in the morning of your flight. Once confirmed, call the hotel and make sure you are on the side away from the railroad tracks, and, if you wish, ask for a non smoking room. The Asian restaurant is truly excellent. Only downside, they put in a charge for internet wireless that used to be free.

Just had to share my great deal!

Too bad you couldn't share which hotel you got. :td:

My guess is the Hyatt Regency near Union Square - I got it for about this price in January - came out at nearly $90 with taxes.

So what hotel? Did you get it on your first bid, or did you use free re-bid zones? More information would be really useful.

OH! I didn't know if I was allowed to give the name of the hotel (don't know why I thought that) But, sure, I'd be happy to tell you which Hotel I got:
Sheraton San Francisco Airport
We're only staying the one night (Sunday) there because we have a flight out the next day. My brother-in-law made other reservations for us at La Quinta Hotel, Downtown San Francisco (3 star) for $96 for the previous night (could have gotten it for $89 with an AAA discount!).
So I feel pretty good about the price I got. We're going to spend the weekend with family in SF & go to see the play "Beach Blanket Babylon". I've heard it's really good.
Happy bidding!

Are you familiar with www.betterbidding.com ? People share their successful (and unsuccessful) bids there as well as Hotwire deals. While that's not a bad price for the Sheraton SFO (prepaid on their site it's about $169 + tax), if you check there you'd have found it usually goes for about $49 on Priceline.

You are correct. ati2d paid far too much.

Hotels at SFO near the airport go for low dollars. I had the Hyatt for $50 more or less. The hotel is a real 4-star .. and free parking for my rental car nearby.

Ouch!

Sorry ati2d, I have to agree. Not a bad price, but not quite the fantastic 10 :-: deal you might have thought.

Do please have a look through this forum, I'm sure you'll pick up a lot of tips! :)

Have a great time! I loved San Francisco and am looking forward to returning. The nice folks at the Regency Hyatt were wonderful to me (even on a PL stay) I couldn't have enjoyed my stay more.

Darn! Well I guess a got a "medium" good price for the hotel room!
I'll do better research next time! Thanks for the head's up.
Still feel ok about the price, though. I'll let you know how I like the hotel when we get back.

Many thanks for the reference - but is there a Flyertalk thread on outguessing Hotwire for hotels?

Here's the beginnings of a suggestion. [Open a new window each time, and delete cookies before each query.]
1. Do the hotel search on Orbitz. This brings up a long list of named hotels with facilities/star rating, usually the same rating as Hotwire
2. On Hotwire, say you want a "package" Hotel+Rental car - if your destination is in their list. This does show the hotel-names and their facilities/stars.
3. (If time). Do a Hotwire query for rental-car only, so you can subtract that amount from the package price to get Hotwire's likely hotel-only price.
4. (If time). Do a Hotwire query for your hotel, but say you want 2 or more rooms. This brings more hotels out of the woodwork and makes it easier to crosscheck with the Orbitz list.
5. Do your real query on Hotwire - and identify the hotels by comparing price, facilities/stars with the named hotels in the other windows
