Press Release from CX:

Cathay Pacific Airways’ premium passengers are now enjoying a much wider selection of inflight viewing with up to 50 movies and more than 100 TV shows available on demand.

The expanded choice – almost 50 percent extra – for First and Business Class passengers is introduced this month, and follows the launch of the new StudioCX user interface in November last year. Chinese-language subtitles have also been added to more of the most popular programmes to make them accessible to a wider range of passengers.

Cathay Pacific’s often premieres new releases before they are screened in Hong Kong theatres. Right now, the only way anyone in Hong Kong can enjoy Oscar-nominated Walk the Line and Pride & Prejudice is on StudioCX on long-haul services from Hong Kong.

The inflight entertainment upgrade includes a number of additions and enhancements, including the introduction of a new movie category, “CX Choice”, which brings together award winning, critically acclaimed movies within retrospectives or other themes.

For February, in anticipation of the 2006 Oscars in early March, CX Choice will be highlighting 10 “must see” movies from the past decade under the theme of “Almost Oscars” – films that were good enough to win a Best Picture award but didn’t quite make it. Among the cult favourites on offer are Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption, Fargo and The Usual Suspects.

A new TV category, “CX Hooked”, showcases some of the hottest, most talked about comedy, drama and reality TV shows. In the launch month there will be five consecutive episodes each of addictive series such as Donald Trump’s The Apprentice (an airline exclusive for CX), 24 and Lost.

The First and Business Class Entertainment Guide has also undergone a complete facelift. The aim is to create something that is less a traditional entertainment guide and more an attention-grabbing entertainment magazine. Editorial content has also been expanded, with a number of new sections, special sidebars and a variety of “fast facts” to spice up content.

Cathay Pacific Director Service Delivery Quince Chong said: “Inflight entertainment is an integral part our premium-class offering. Our latest improvements, with greatly enhanced viewing choice and some smart new features, is something that Cathay Pacific’s customers have come to expect from the airline of the year”.

While the premiums have all the frills, the Y passengers are treated like
nobody's cattle...

A lot of airlines has AVOD (or going to install one) in Y, including VS, ANZ,
SQ, AC, EK, MH, NH, JL, QF, BA, KLM, CI, BR... Why do CX deliberately
disable AVOD for Y while charging the highest ticket price over all their
competitors on the same route???

It seemed the case that CX doesn't have the 'equipment' to run AVOD on most of their aircraft bar the 4 of the newer A333/330, 4 of the newer B773, 3 ex SQ A343, 2 ex-SQ B744 and the A346 all of which has an integrated handset crucial for the on demand function and the rest have the old Digital Passenger Control Unit. Secondly, AFAIK, the system and softwares installed doesn't allow for a AVOD function.

To refit the enrire fleet would costs a lot of money and down time.

Another upside if you are in J or F - no commercials before the movie (at least this month). That was a nice surprise.

Er, because they can? As a shareholder I would regard it as bad management to do anything else... You obviously don't work in a business trying to maximise profit.

Because ex-HKG, CX is home based carrier and therefore is more expensive than others. Similarly the same goes for SQ in Singapore, and believe it or not, TG in BKK is the most expensive. But from BKK, SIN, MNL, TPE... for CX flying via HKG to final destination, CX is one of the more cheaper ones because it requires a transit.

I don't think CX is delilberately disabling AVOD. I believe the answer is here:

Hey! I know who you are and you should also know I've replied on that post
already!

Btw, I think the answer will come when the 77W are rolled out. If AVOD is
still unavailable in Y class on 77W then CX IS DELIBERATELY disabling AVOD
in Y.

Yes.. but people here don't necessarily read CathayTalk.

How about the music?
They have a great UK DJ - Annie Nightengale who lays out sets for CX, but they are only 80 minutes long... a bit repetitive on a 12 hr haul...
I once wrote her to ask, but she never replied...

Is there a trick to get no commercial? Other than fast forward (which works badly, the system freezes up so it is imprecise).

Maybe I got lucky? I did fly at the beginning of February - perhaps the mistake ;) was rectified???

This new enhanced system is a nice evolution. No commercials, and the "CX Choice" (or something like that) has some great movie classics, like Fargo and Goodfellas, some real oldies but goodies.

No commercials on CX872 (2/26/06). Current offerings include many oscar-nominated films including Capote, Walk the line, North Country, A history of violence, Corpse Bride, Pride and Prejudice. GO CX! ^ ^

I finally figured it out; there are 2 slightly different AVOD systems installed on 744s, and amongst other operational differences one has commercials this month and the other does not. Programming content is identical. The one with commercials is also a bit sluggish at the helm.

The content is quite good, including a lot of TV shows. Such as 6 hours of "24".

Inspite of the gazillion movies and TV shows on these IFE systems, somehow the on demand part of the system, i.e. being able to pause, FF, REW, is way too clumsy, awkward, imprecise and not intuitive enough. Video control is so VHS-era.

I am of the "glass is half full" school of thought. Why don't you fly AA, where this month the only thing worth watching was "Walk the Line", and that was in one transpac direction, not the other.

It just amazes me the low regard US airlines have for their customers in this regard.

It's not that I don't know how to work the IFE system. It's that it is, as I already said, awkward to use.
