Whippet on the run after getting out of cage

Wednesday, February 15, 2006; Posted: 8:34 p.m. EST (01:34 GMT)

NEW YORK (AP) -- A canine contestant in this week's Westminster Kennel Club show escaped from its cage at John F. Kennedy International Airport and was believed to be on the loose in the surrounding area, authorities said.

The dog, a whippet, broke free Wednesday around noon and still hadn't been found hours later, said Tiffany Townsend, a spokeswoman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs area airports.

Port Authority police were working with the dog's owners to search the area where planes arrive and depart, she said.

I wasn't paying close attention, but the matter was discussed with one owner on MSNBC's Countdown last night (3/22) I believe (or at least sometime in the last few days on that show). Transcripts are not posted yet, but will probably be on the site later today. Search for "Long Island" inside the transcript, and I think it will take you directly to the discussion.

From what I remember, the dog is still missing, but there have been recent sightings in certain areas around the Long Island expressway (tollway?, freeway?), with the owner(s?) believing that they knew the general area where the dog was roaming.
