Hilton HHonors - Hilton HHonors Properties at Washington Dulles Airport

I will be spending several nights a week over the next few months near the Dulles, VA airport. Will be working in office park just off the Dulles Toll Road. Can anyone advise as to a nice property to stay, your expreiences there, prices, anemities, etc., etc.

A search of orbitz web site says there are properties in the following areas, Dulles, Herndon, Reston, and Sterling VA. I've never been there, but have heard the highways can get congested at rush hour.

Also, any insights into restaurants and things to do, places to socialize will be appreciated.

There is a Hilton right there - but as of March it was under renovation - so check ifs its done - it was incredibly noisy - staff is very cold - but upgrades and exec loung access go like clockwork.

The Marriot on the airport grounds is also nice and actually quieter http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

The Hyatt , IMO, is awful. Even as a Hyatt Diamond I had a room that was mildewed and smelly. When I requested to move, I was moved to a room with a soaking wet carpet in the sink area.

I've stayed at the Hampton Inn in Dulles on Holiday road several times and it's well run. There's a free shuttle to the airport, a good free breakfast and a Holiday Inn 100 yards away with a good sports bar.

Right on! I was upgraded at the Dulles Hyatt (across from the toll road) and it was okay, considering trhe weekend rate was only $89, but still a bit creaky - but certainly beats the Reston Hyatt. Every time I have been there I have felt robbed. Last time, I nearly walked out, but my two colleagues travelling with me were too knocked out to move.

Dingy bathrooms - my bathtub had a freaking hole in it that was patched with white stuff - really stands out in a brownish tub. And I got the same room (don't know why - punishment??) six weeks later.

To top it off, I have had a handful of upgrades to Regency Club expire because the freaking front desk claims it's full up, even though I was confirmed.

Makes me mad that I gave them enough business to get Platinum (big whopping deal) when I could have been at the Hilton or Mariott for less money and better service!

Actually, you really should look at the Towne Place Suites - they are just around the corner from the AOL campus, just after the Holiday Inn as you come from the Airport / Toll Road. I've tried it and it's comfortable, if you don't mind carrying your own bags. I have sent some of my longer stay people there - they will give you a very good rate for the total volume of days you will be there, and you get Mariott points as well - sorry, Hilton!

I see there is quite a few Hilton family hotels at Dulles airport, has anyone any advice on the best? one that has a decent bar and restaurant, a frequent shuttle service to/from the terminals and good sound proofing.

I have only stayed at the Hilton Dulles Airport, but I quite like it (which is why I keep going back). Shuttles to/from IAD run every thirty mins, more or less. Decent restaurant on-site. The only downside for me, since I stay there mostly on weekends, is that the executive lounge is closed from Friday after breakfast through Sunday breakfast. Also supposedly closed on holidays. But you will get coupons to the breakfast buffet in the restaurant (for continental buffet, although the last couple of visits the waiter has told us to help ourselves to everything - YMMV).

Another positive to the hotel, if you are interested in visiting the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy air & space museum, is that the hotel is only about a 5-min. drive from the museum and the hotel has a shuttle to and from it (for $5 RT).

Try less. Granted, I've only stayed there once, but waiting out in the dark, in a cold fog, it felt like an eternity. They should try speeding up the shuttle service. I remember seeing the Sheraton and other shuttles come around twice before the Hilton's finally arrived.

Other than that, I did enjoy the property. As a Silver, I was even upgraded to a very large room on the Executive floor.

I dig the Embassy Suites out there. It's not too far and nearer to restaurants and shops in Herndon. Shuttle service was good, too.

Hi,

I stayed at the Hampton Inn Dulles Cascades last week. It is very nice, pretty new, walking distance to shops, a Giant supermarket , food etc. but it is not very near to IAD. Around a 20 minute shuttle ride to/from. I called the hotel from the G Gates and the Hotel bus was driving up to 2H by the time I got to the curb which is a harsh condemnation of the G Gates Bus service, the circuitous route through the main terminal etc.

The Hamtpon had good high speed internet, eadible breakfast buffet and a big package of oreos and 2 bottles of water in the room. I probobly would not stay there by first choice unless I was going somewhere near the hotel for business, but it happened to be the only Hilton property in the general vicinity with the govt rate or better available for the nights I needed.

I like the Dulles Hilton. As a lowly Gold, I have gotten an upgrade to a huge room on the top floor on all three of my stays there. The bathroom was huge, and there must have been about 10 different seats/couches in the room!

I stayed at the Dulles Hampton a few months ago and wouldn't have anything bad to say about it. Then again, I'm not nearly as particular as some. I was looking for a good rate for a two day trip to the airport and surrouding area and it was a good price and location, since I had to pay for everything.

I have had a flight reservation and due to all the schedule changes, I now have to arrive the night before in order to catch an international flight.

Any recommendations out there for best short overnight stay near Dulles with free transport?

Looks like the Hilton just had a $40M rennovation that completed in December 2005, and I think I see rates for around $100.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Can you fly there?

Dulles Hilton is comfortable and convenient for an overnight. It's just by itself. If you need to get out to restaurants or shopping...Reston Hyatt is in upscale area. It is a little drive from airport but shuttle is included

I've always had good stays at the Dulles Hilton; easy transport to the airport, decent upgrades and breakfast for Diamonds, etc. If you have some time during the day, they offer a van (reasonably priced) to the spectacular nearby Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (www.nasm.si.edu/udvarhazy/) (annex to the National Air and Sapce Museum) at IAD. Who knows, he may own some of the aircraft you are flying on righ tnow. ;)

(Last time I was at the IAD Hilton, General Paul Tibbetts was there (pilot of the B-29 Enola Gay, vehicle for the first atomic bomb.)

I spent most of last year in either the IAD Hilton or IAD/Reston Hyatt. I would choose the Hyatt over the Hilton. Both the front desk and bar/restaurant staff were much friendlier. I got to know both Jaime and Stephanie in the bar, they knew my dinner and drink order as soon as I showed up.

Also as a wine freak, I also was annoyed that the restaurant at the Hilton didn't have large red wine glasses but the bar did. We had to ask many times before they would bring them to us in the restaurant.

We live in the DC area and stayed there three nights this Fall when we either had an early flight or wanted to do park and fly. Made to order breakfast, and evening reception, and it is a nice facility.

Two things to note--believe it or not, there are two Embassy Suites--this is the nicer one--the other at Dulles North, is farther away as well. When I see the pickup van, I always say "I want the one with the swans" as the trademark of the Woodland Park ES are two swans swimming in the large open lobby.

One other thing--breakfast is served "late" in my opinion on weekends 7 am and later so if you have an early flight, you get nothing.

I spent 3 months at the Homewood Suites Dulles Airport. I believe this hotel is the closest to the airport of all Hilton properties. They have a complimentary shuttle to and from the airport.

The hotel isn't anything fabulous or terrible. It is a relatively new property, free breakfast comparable to a Hampton Inn or another Homewood property. The rooms are quite large since this is a Homewood Suites. The cleanliness was quite impressive.

There is a pool as well as a hot tub indoors. The exercise room is a piece of crap unless they upgraded it since I was there (October 04-January 05).

For what it's worth, I would frequently see flight crews receiving rides to the airport from the hotel staff in the shuttle.

Dining: there are a few choices in the plaza across the street. Ned Devine's, Red Lobster, and Reston Town Center is only a short ride away.

I second this one. Everytime I have an early morning flight from Dulles, I stay at this hotel the night before. Your basic ES, but the people seem a bit nicer.

The swans are nice, too. One thing to note ... the swans are not, in fact, part of the breakfast buffet. We were almost asked to leave because of that .. .luckly, my diamond status got us out of that mess... :)

I got stuck at IAD the other day with all the rain etc and UA put me up in the Hilton. I had a really good experience there. It seems they are in the middle of a refurb and I got a newer room with the newer Hilton beds and plasma tv. I was really impressed with how nice the hotel was for an airport hotel and also the service was great especially given the circumstances.

My only complaint was the shuttle seemed slow both arriving at the airport for pickup and for leaving the hotel.

We do stays at IAD the night before an early flight quite often, typically on a Friday night. We always stay at the Hampton Inn Dulles South as it almost always has the least expensive rates.....was $62.10 on a AAA rate until just recently....now looks to be $81. Can't see spending another $20+ for one of the other properties mentioned. Even at $81 it is less expensive than other close to the airport properties, although the Homewood Suites is sometimes available on a Net Direct (pay in advance rate) of $75.24. Avoid Hampton Inn Dulles Airport....exterior corridors, although it was renovated within the last two years.

I'm bumping this thread, seeking up-to-date information, as the last post was 17 months ago.

I would be extremely grateful for any recommendations for a stay at a Hilton property within a shuttle-bus ride of Washington Dulles airport.

I'm HHonors Diamond, and it would be an award stay in December 2006.

Many thanks in advance.

Recently stayed at the Homewood Dulles-North (Waxpool Road). Chose the hotel due to (1) size of group (2) proximity to a brewfest we were attending. Thus, we didn't have to use the shuttle to get to/from IAD.

Nice new hotel. Kind of unusual in that it's connected to the Embassy Suites, and you have use of their indoor pool (and their guests have use of the Homewood outdoor pool), and they share shuttle service.

They'll provide local transport, but IAD runs get priority. Local can include the aforementioned Dominion brewpub and a large Wegman's grocery store.

Nice enough staff, but Gold treatment was nothing special (welcome letter, but never found water or snacks) Also, got up too late for breakfast, so can't report on that.

The hotel was best for my needs, but if you're just looking for IAD in general you have a lot of choices. Either the Homewood or the Embassy should work fine, but I wouldn't spend extra or go out of my way just to stay here.

The Hilton keeps getting dingy and more run down. Also the soundproofing is poor. I think my next stay in that area will be the newer HS or perhaps the ES.

I recently stayed at the Hilton Dulles when I missed my connection. The room itself was fine and I had no issues there, but I was only at the hotel about 5 hours). My only complaint was that the airlines booked tons of people at the Hilton and it took forever for a shuttle bus to arrive. After it arrived it could only fit about 1/2 of the people waiting. It took awhile to get to the hotel and at after midnight only 1 check-in person. There were at least 15 people ahead of me in line and a handful behind me. I was going to go to the Honors line but one guy already tried that and everyone in line gave him grief over it I caved in and stayed in the long line. With so many on hotel vouchers from the airlines it took a lot longer to check everyone in. I know the hotel could not anticipate the large volume, so I can not fault them there.

There is nothing close to the hotel though, if it is an overnight only, stay at the Hilton, if you are there for a longer amount of time, stay a little further away at the Hampton Inn Cascades.

Is the lounge still closed on weekends does anyone know? And if so will they likely give breakfast coupons for Golds?

Also FWIW the bus to Space Museum is now free according to hotel website. We'll be using it. :)

Rates about $97 as I type this. Looks like a deal. ^

The Hilton Washington Dulles Airport Hotel offers complimentary scheduled shuttle service from the hotel to the National Air & Space Museum at Dulles International Airport This is a free service to the guests of our hotel.

I was here a couple of weekends ago(and 6-8 times per year) and the lounge was closed...but the breakfast(with certs) was not bad in the restaurant(Golds too!). If the hotel is full, the shuttles to the museum are usually packed (my observation) with a long wait...sometimes it is easier to grab a cab out front($7-8)...I normally have a rental car so I don't deal with this! At $97...not a bad deal!

I stayed at the Hilton a couple of weeks ago.
Second most of the posts, slowish van (but free, including trip to/from museum), abit out of the way, immaculate (newly refurbished), cheap rates, decent service, nice (free) breakfast, free internet in the business centre saved a silly in room fee, best of all, a lovely upgrade to a king suite! Shame twas only me and only one night...

I like the homewood in Loudon. Do not stay at the Dulles Hampton - Worst property evar.

There have been a few negative comments in this thread about this property, and having stayed there, let me explain why. The rooms and room configuration have a definite "Motel 6" kind of feel to them.

The rooms are not "interior to the hotel"--that is, you go right from outside to the room. I personally hate this for privacy, safety, and aesthetic reasons. The rooms themselves have an old, cheap, motel-like feel to it, obviously reflecting the fact that most people here stay for a short time one night, and leave the next day on a flight. Even the bar of soap (unless they have changed this recently) is one of those tiny "one use" versions that you get in cheap motels.

I agree. Avoid this one.

I've stayed at the Hilton Washington Dulles a number of times now but due to a good rate and for a change I've opted for the Embassy Suites on Waxpool Road (they include 14 nights parking in the rate ^) on my next stay.

Seems a bit further from the airport than the Hilton but looks good on paper (and on the website). Anyone else stay here before? Do you know if they have a business center with interweb access? I'm looking to OLCI for my flights the following day but don't want to haul my laptop with me for the trip.

Thanks

Ironically for the dates I wanted the Embassy Suites and the Hilton are cheaper than the HI!

I'm at the Homewood Dulles Airport tonight and this place is very nice. They are undergoing a small renovation, but the staff couldn't be nicer and the room I'm in is very clean. The Manager's Reception was very tasty this evening and I would definitely stay here again if I need a hotel around Dulles. I don't need the shuttle, but it stated that the shuttle runs on the hour and half-hour which is nice for getting to the airport. In addition there are plenty of restaurants around the area, but none within walking distance.

Hampton Inn & Suites Herndon/Reston, VA.

Thought I'd report back myself as this seems to be a very new property. Initial impressions were good, lobby is bright and vibrant with plenty of tables. Staff friendly although initially couldn't find my reservation. A search by HHonors number found it.

We'd picked the 'Studio Suite' as it was the same price as a regular room (we paid $65+tax two days before we arrived!) and it was down the end of the hallway on the corner of the hotel. Small living room area but with the hallway having microwave, fridge et. al. Room had good LCD flat panel TV, I'm not very good on the sizes but 32" might be about right. Plenty of channel choices including lots in HD ^

Only odd thing about the room was the fact the curtains proper didn't close. You just had the thickish net curtains so the room was bathed slightly in that urban orange glow. Not enough to keep you awake but for some idea if you sat at the end of the bed the bright lights of the aircraft flying down the east side of IAD were quite visible. I did check to make sure I wasn't being an idiot and sure enough the tracks for the curtains didn't extend all the way across the window. Possibly problematic for light sleepers but not for my wife or I.

Breakfast was usual Hampton affair, the lobby was quite busy (9.15am on a Saturday) but there were still plenty of tables and all clean too. Not too many hot options, only those cheesy/bacon things...

Overall: For $65+tax it is superb value, and not too far from IAD if you need a spare room.

Just stayed at this one on a mattress run to get my Gold fast-track. Rate was $53 (under $60 including tax) with the Team USA discount and on a Saturday night. (Just looked at the rate for tonight - Sunday - and it's showing $139.):cool

Nice new place, check-in was fast, everything was very nice - except for a housekeeping issue. Went to take a shower this morning and there was a large clump of hair in the shower drain:td:. Called the front desk, and they didn't seem very concerned. They did offer to send housekeeping, but I told them I would just check-out, since I live nearby and can just use the shower at my place.

Overall - since the rate was so cheap, I can't complain too much, but the housekeeping issue would have bothered me a lot had I been there on business and needed to go to a client site that morning.
