Suggestions for CUN PVR and MEX with easy access to and from airports.
Easy accessibility to tour departure points and local tourist sites to visit.
Wife likes lots of shopping nearby.

Any good places that fit all of this?

For Puerto Vallarta I like the Westin. Right on the beach in the Marina district. 5 minutes from the airport and lots of great restaraunts nearby. 5 minutes to downtown PV.

For Mexico City there are a pile of nice hotels. Recently I have stayed in the Sheraton Centro Historico, the W Polanco, and the Sheraton Maria Isabel (yes, I prefer Starwood hotels). All very nice hotels. The Sheraton CH is much more reasonably priced, in a very safe area of the city, and close to shopping, restaurants (Angus in the Zona Rosa is my fav), and site seeing. Avoid the Sheraton Maria Isabel. They may be closing that down soon - do a google for the story on this.

Hope this helps

In Cancun, the only hotel I know of close to the airport is the Moon Palace, which is very nice. I didn't stay there, but our airport bus did pick up and drop off there, and everyone who stayed said it was amazing.

Most of the other hotels are in the hotel zone. When I was last there (before the hurricanes), there was lots of shopping, but I don't know the current status. Just checking on-line, lots of the hotels are still closed (like the J.W. Marriott, which was nice).

Cancun hotel zone is $20 by taxi from Airport. Ride is anywhere from 10 to20 minutes. Shopping is great as are restaurants.

Question is what do you want and for how long? Also, when will you be going? Many hotels are not yet open although most are. For info on openings go to www.cancun.info. The Le Meridien is now open. The Royal Sands is fabulous and you can rent a room, suite (has LR and full kitchen and eating area- sleeps 4) or a villa (room + suite - sleeps 6). Great spa.

We will be there June 5th-11th.
Would like to stay in the hotel zone near shopping and entertainment.
Does anyone know the status of the beaches?
Thanks.

If you are thinking of coming to the Cancun area, I suggest you consider staying somewhere south of Cancun, since they were hit very hard by hurricane wilma. Playa del Carmen is pretty much back to normal and further south in the Tankah/Tulum area were not hit hard at all, and were back in business within the week after the storm.

Not sure about tours and such; but I am currently staying at the Nikko Hotel in Mexico City and it's great. Best deal for the price, and really a top-notch hotel. The W is also nice in Mexico City, and I hear if you tell them you work for HP, you get a killer deal (my colleagues have done this and say they don't require proof of employment with them either).

Been there last month. Most of Condesa beach and hotels are working just as usual. Airport looks like nothing happened.

I should have also asked which area of Mexico City is easy to connect to from the airport and which hotels are close to the subways lines and stations.
Am I correct that by taking Line 1 from the airport that it runs west thru the city? How much does it cost to get on.
I would like to able to stay somewhere near Line 1 so that pulling luggage is not a problem to a hotel.
But which station to use to get to a convenient hotel, nearby sights, and of course shopping for the wife?

Thanks to all for previous info.

For shopping and beaches, almost all of Cancun is back up and running. Only beach issue is the north end of the eastern side, which hasn't had the sand replenished yet.

I second your thoughts on the Moon Palace Hotel and Golf Resort.

Got married there last March and it was fabulous. The drive from the airport is approx 5-10mins with a further 10mins up the driveway into the private hotel grounds.

It is about 15-20mins from the strip in Cancun by bus/cab and they have a free shuttle that loops all day around the other Palace Resorts on the strip, you can use all the facilities at these aswell.

PM me if you want anymore info.

I am writing directly from the Obelisk Suites in MEX, Polanco quarter. While not a brand name hotel (they are all one block nearby: Intercontinental, Westin, Nikko, Marriott, one beside the other), it has a faboulous locations and very comfortable suites at a reasonable price (ca. USD 100).

Best restaurants, pubs and shopping opportunities nearby. From the airport it should not cost more than 150 MXP (15 USD).

I agree the Westin is very nice. It has wonderful pools and the bus stop into town is across the street. ^
