CALGARY, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - Feb. 10, 2006) - Beginning today at 2:00 p.m. EST., WestJet (TSX:WJA) guests won't miss a minute cheering on their fellow Canadians, despite being 34,000 feet above ground.

WestJet, the only airline in Canada offering complimentary seatback television, offers live satellite television on more than 93% of the Boeing Next-Generation aircraft in its fleet.

Bob Cummings, WestJet's Vice-President of Marketing, said today, "Over the next few weeks, WestJet guests will enjoy the unique opportunity to root for our athletes even while flying across Canada or to the United States."

WestJet is Canada's leading low-fare airline offering scheduled service throughout its 33-city North American network. Named Canada's most respected corporation for customer service in 2005, WestJet pioneered low-cost high-value flying in Canada. With increased legroom and leather seats on its modern fleet of Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft, and live seatback television provided by Bell ExpressVu on the majority of its fleet, WestJet strives to be the number one choice for travellers.

This is really an example of marketing spin.

The Olympics are featured on television and WestJet has live TV on their aircraft. Therefore WestJet is featuring the Olympics on their flights.

WestJet also features the soaps and other regularly programmed TV show.

Still, cool to be able to watch something interesting while on board ^

Maybe even AC commercials? ;)

How many "guests" are going to watch the Olympics, or anything else for that matter, on the much vaunted YVR-Maybe a tech stop-Hawaii runs ??

Is WJ still charging for headsets to watch Free T.V. ??

There's a choice of 4 movies in coach after LiveTV loses the signal about an hour out.

That's a tad better than AC's day old 3 minute day old news, followed by a movie or two.

$1 for standard headphones, $3 for premium, free if you do what most people do and bring your own.

Is ACE still charging $2 for a blanket? :D

Still, a pointless headline.

What's next?

WS guests will all be able to drink Coke (TM) on flights this Tuesday. ?

Slow news day I guess.

I guess that WS is planning lots of flight delays as the olympics are on 24/7 just about. I just went on line and bought my full year's flt needs at WJ.com....LOL

Well that's a pretty useless post.

Useless ?? Kinda like the whole press release to start with don't you think ??

A petty way to keep putting out new releases to the media, not quite as bad as WJ's whole Airport of the year nonsense. Nobody really cares.

WJ charges for headsets, so therefore the service is not free as advertised.

So no Olympics after an hour and for 80% of the flight back to the mainland, not exactly as advertised.

Yes, I think Air Canada does charge for a blanket, but they do not advertise to the contrary.

The news is not day old, unless you happen to be getting on a flight in Delhi or Tokyo, but I forgot WJ does not fly to thos places, and if they did the Sat TV would have live news for everyone to see (tongue firmly planted in cheek).

Get over yourself Coffebean, everybody else around here certainly has.

Why. The press release says complimentary TV, yet you have to pay for the headphones? What a crock. Why not advertise free silent movies

Watching the TV is complimentary. The release doesn't say anything about hearing it LOL.

Is this a new standard operating procedure at Westjet marketing for major sports events? I.E. press release that Westjet guests will be able to watch the highlightwed sporting event.

This could get boring very quickly and at $500 per PR, expensive.

Is there some sort of Olympic copyright infringement here as well ??

The IOC and COA pounce every chance they get on those who are attempting to gain from the Olympics but have not paid for the rights.

I am neither an AC or WS apoligist but for all of you touting AC inflight entertainment let me tell you about the last 3 times I have flown on AC.
The last time none of the audio worked for about 8 rows in economy. the time before the picture on the screen was so bad it was pointless to watch. The time before the system didn't work at all. So before you go pouncing on people admit that neither airline's system is perfect.

I love how the WS forum is merely an outlet for relaying one-upping WS press releases (notice the lack of questions about WS' SOP, good or bad service, etc?), which result in the AC apologists to get in pissing matches with the WS apologists. Of course, the ACers cause more of a stir when WSers come on their forum . I'd hate to see you guys converge in a turf war in the B/C terminal in YYC :D (what a lame inside joke)

Bring your own headphones and it is free.

Most businessguys I know have the Bose noise cancellation headphones. $299 but worth every penny.

Cur: Big difference between AC community members posting about WS, good or bad, in the WS forum than WS ...posters in the AC forum ranting about WS itself, on threads such as "AC launches YUL-DEN service"...

Enjoying the complimentary upgrades like you did on CO, PE? If WS had a J cabin, my tune might change somewhat. In the meantime (and presumably, forever), they are just bus service. And, as Coffebean will likely point out, lots of people like to take the bus. Just not business people travelling YYZ-USA ;)

Might as well delete my post as well, as someone thought better of their rant about business travellers deleted it.

ACE lost $16 a second in the fourth quarter carrying businessmen from YYZ to the USA.

WJA had the second highest margins in North America, after that other perenial dog, Southwest Airlines, focussing on what makes money.

Exactly. See my post in the other thread.

CB, how many $ per second did ACE make in profit for 2005 in aggregate? Remember, you don't like looking at things at the micro level, only the macro.

ACE should not be an exception to your rule...

No kidding. I remember the CBC blocked out internet streaming of Radio 1 and 2 during the Olympics period after the first few days of broadcasting. I was sad.

But luckily I found another CBC-related station and kept in touch with Canada that way.

Get a high speed connection and a $300 piece of hardware and you can watch your Canadian satellite feed from anywhere on the planet.

But I'm out of the Olympics spirit anyway. I haven't even watched any of the coverage since it started. Too much to do.

Yup, SB by SM.

I have 2 of them running.

Probably the most useful piece of technology for people spending time on the road or living out of the country ever invented.

Hint: If you use the video output on your laptop, and run either S Video or VGA to a TV, most people wouldn't even know the picture was running thru the internet, except maybe when watching fast moving sports.

Very few people in Canada know about it, in fact, the store that I bought them from in the US, in essence, has stores in Canada, and they've never heard of it. Amazon.com won't ship it to Canada, but there is one Cdn based e-retailer that carries it, but brings it up from the US.

A great unit. ^
