JerryGuitar Feb 8, 06, 9:20 am my wife and i did sonoma in sept '04, and we're going back sept '06. great time of the year to be up there. while we were at Ravenswood, the trucks were coming in from the fields loaded with cab grapes and we were able to taste them right off the vine. we stayed at the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa, which I would recommend. if you stay there, definately get a spa treatment - their facilities are very nice. as far as wineries to hit, it might depend on the varietals you like. i'm a zin guy, so ravenswood was a must see. maybe this year we'll hit up Ridge. Chateau St. Jean was a beautiful property, and we enjoyed their Fume Blanc (i'm not really into whites, but this was very good, and it is only available at the estate). there is a lot to do/see/eat/drink and many good places to stay. enjoy your trip! epi231 Feb 8, 06, 11:31 am This thread on favorite wineries may be helpful: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=302248 as well as this one on wine country hotels: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=483460 My suggestion would be to take a day to drive out to the coast, stopping at Korbel for champagne and Armstrong Woods (redwood forest) on the way. (There are several other wineries in the Russian River area.) Have a great trip. Can you fly there? Feb 12, 06, 8:48 am best wineries to visit. If you are a red wine fan..then Jarvis does a great tour of their caves and has great sit down tasting. Opt for top end tasting. Slightly off the beaton path near Calistago, Frank Family wines makes a fun champaign, chard and cab. It reminds me of when wineries before they all became so commercial. Do a balloon trip if you've haven't before.(Bring a bottle of champaign with you) bltserv Feb 16, 06, 12:21 am My wife and I will be spending a week in the wine country area in September. Any recommendations on nice hotels/inns/B&B's and best wineries to visit. We go a couple times a year. If its your first trip. Start on the Napa side. My 2 favorites are both 4 Stars. Harvest Inn in St. Helena. We just stayed there last weekend. Right in the best winery area. Great rooms Nice people and service. Second choice is Napa Valley Lodge in Yountville. Again, central Napa loaction. If you are going to spend a entire week. I would suggest. 3-4 Days in Napa, 3-4 Days on the other side. Sonoma. Suggest the Healdsberg Inn. Charlie Palmer opened this last year. Have not stayed there. But went to the bar and restaurant. Very nice. The small town atmosphere in Sonoma is just California at its best. On a side note. Downtown Napa got hit hard by the recent flooding. Last weekend it still was only about half open. Sandbags everywhere still. But by Sept things should be back to normal. |
