Hertz - Hertz rented a car under my name to someone else

Had a disturbing experience with Hertz at MCI this week and I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this and, if so, how Hertz resolved it. I had a reservation at MCI from 1/30 to 2/2. Picked up the car on schedule, returned it on schedule and flew home. This morning, I saw two different charges on my credit card from Hertz. One for the amount of the rental, and a second charge for an additional $115. I went to their website to review my receipts and find out what happened, and there were two receipts for two seperate rentals at MCI that both began on 1/30. It looks like Hertz charged me for someone else's car rental. The vehicle description, time of pick-up and drop-off, as well as the rental agreement number were all different from the receipt for the car that I actually rented.

What really upsets me is that my name, DL and CC number were all on this second invoice, meaning the person who actually rented it probably got a receipt with my personal information on it from my #1 Gold profile. Furthermore, if this anonymous renter had caused an accident, committed a crime with the vehicle, etc., it could have been a real mess for me. I am wondering how the heck Hertz can let something like this happen without bothering to check someone's DL to make sure they are the person on the rental agreement?

Wondering if anyone has ever had anything like this happen, and if so, how it got resolved. I sent a letter into Hertz, but it may be a couple of days before I get a response and I am curious as to what to expect. Any feedback is appreciated...

Something a bit similar happened to me once at SFO. I had a C reservation, but did an on-the-fly counter upgrade to a Prestige car. When I returned the Prestige car and checked receipts later on, I was charged two separate receipts, one for my rental and one for the midsize car (I guess the agent forgot to cancel my old reservation). I called up Hertz CS and they removed the charge promptly.

One thing I wonder about my error is how I even got charged for the second car in the first place -- doesn't billing only take place when the rental is actually taken out (i.e. when you go through the exit gates)? So if the car had been sitting there, why should charges have been started? The receipt for the midsize car showed 0 miles driven...

IIRC, your recepits don't have the full credit card number on it. I think it does have your DL number, I wouldn't be too paranoid... as long as they cancel the other charge then I'd consider it a done deal.

Scary... doing a search just now because the same thing happened to me this week. I picked up a car 2/13 and still have the car in my possession. I discovered a bill on my online AmEx statement for Hertz on 2/14 and pulled up the receipt at Hertz.com. Someone had a car for 1.5 days, drove 67 miles and the records show me as the renter. My name was not on the Gold board when I picked up the car on 2/13, so the desk people had to assign me another car. I'm guessing that someone drove off with the car I had originally be assigned, and the guard didn't notice the wrong name... or couldn't read English.

I called national billing and they said that the local station manager has to resolve. So far I'm playing phone tag with the station manager. In addition to removing the charges, I want to confirm that they remove all record of me having that vehicle in my possession.

I had a something like this happen to me at PDX in 2003. I noticed a charge on my credit card, so I called up Hertz, explained the situation and I got an e-mail a few days later stating that there was a "billing error" and the charges were refunded.

If the person who rented a car in your name gets a parking ticket, I'd expect even more trouble. Hertz, at least, will put a break on car rentals until the ticket cost is settled.

That is precisely how Hertz wound up resolving the situation in my original post. No explanation of how a different rental wound up in my name or on my credit card, just refunded the charge due to a "billing error". I suggested there was probably an error of judgement of letting a car out in my name, but that got nowhere with them.

I had a similar situation happen, and once the billing folks reversed the charges, I wrote a scathing letter in about their carelessness. It resulted in a voucher. ;)

If you want something more than your money back, you have one more step to complete.
