Budget Travel - Dublin - budget hotel recommendation?

Hi... I am heading to Dublin in a couple of weeks for a quick
weekend - Fri and Sat nights. I am interested in any budget
hotel recommendations... I need a single room, not too far
from the city center... would prefer a hotel and not a hostel.
(I have searched previous posts and see some hostel info,
but not hotels.)

Might there be anything that anyone could recommend,
perhaps in the 50-60 Euro range???

Thanks very much for your help!

I honestly don't think you will find much in Dublin at the weekend for 50-60 euro a night, especially not in the city centre. Even outside the city centre (such as the Ibis - 20 mins on the tram for the city centre) will be €72. You might want to research some Dublin Bed and Breakfast accomodation on the web, these tend to have (slightly) cheaper rates than hotels.

I agree with Colm - even the cheapest hotels around town (Bewleys, Jurys etc.) are in the €99 per room per night category.

Check out http://www.visitdublin.com/ - you might get some good B&B rates here. If you're flying into Dublin, try using the regular bus service with Dublin Bus - www.dublinbus.ie - it's about €1.90 o/w from the airport to the City Centre on the No. 41

Don't ignore the hostels actually. Some of them actually have double rooms. While I understand that you are looking for single room, have you considered paying for a double room for single occupancy? It would probably cost you about EUR50-60 which is within your budget. I recommend Barnacles Temple Bar Inn. Very nice place!! :)

Enjoy your weekend in Dublin! I went there just before Christmas and enjoyed myself thoroughly!!

Thinking outside the box, I love it ^

I was in Dublin this past weekend and stayed at the Kellys Hotel on South Gt Georges St for 60 euros for Saturday and 50 euros for Sunday night. It was a twin ensuite room but I paid the single rate. I found the room through laterooms.com. The hotel is in a great location and serves a decent breakfast.

The idea of paying single occupancy for a double room is a really good one, that I've seen often done at hostels before. As already pointed out, for a little extra $$, you basically get a private room to yourself. I once saw a group of 3 girls each do this for their own rooms, and they were all joking about using the "extra" bed as a big, padded shelf for all their gear.

Doing this idea at a hostel like the Avalon House wouldn't be too bad...it's constantly rated as one of the better, cleaner hostels in Dublin..and the "smaller" (read: fewer beds) rooms are on upper floors, away from the crowds. I actually ended up getting a 4-bed room to myself one night there, due to a booking error on their part. It was actually not bad at all, and if I wans't having to continue my journey the next day, I would have considered payinging the extra $$ to keep it that way a few days.

The FT Dublin Do is actually in a couple of weeks as well: have been thinking of going the 'budget' route for at least part of this (yeah, yeah, to make up for the ungodly amount of money I'll be spending on a "hotel" the other nights :D ). ...am already checking out the great ideas posted here so far.

I just booked three different hostels for my New Zealand trip later this month, with either a double or twin room. At about $US40-45 a night, it's quite reasonable, and I didn't need to think twice about it. It really does depend where you're going. I'm at the YHA St Pancras in London next week in a 4 bed dorm room, as just a dorm bed is $36 on the weekends. I've never had a problem sleeping there in the 4 bed rooms, and they pretty good sound insulation against street noise (only about 3-4 years old).

Skye1,

I'm also going to the Dublin Doo. I'll be staying one night and have already booked at the Four Courts Hostel ! It's adjacent to the Temple Bar ^

I look forward to meeting up at the Doo !

Thanks for the recco. on the Four Courts. It doesn't seem to get the really good reviews that the Avalon gets, but I'm not finding any real horrible comments on it either. (I guess I'm spoiled on the good experiences I've had at Avalon, so may be a little biased, but I'll keep looking into it).

I didn't find any negative reviews either ! I do remember Tom (Tom911) saying on another thread that his room (facing the river) was kinda noisy IIRC. I don't mind, I shall see !

Was able to look over sites like hostelz, trip advisor, igougo, bugbackpkr, etc. The reviews seem to rave about the close proximity to Temple Bar...but but seem less than thrilled about anything regarding the hostel itself. Average. Okay. All right. Budget. Sterile. Institutional. "It's only a hostel." Not the "glowing" comments you'd see for other places, I guess. As they say, "one way to find out for sure...."

Since I mostly book thru hostel.com, these are the reviews I've read

I did stay there when I was over in October. Location is excellent, and there's an Easy Everything internet cafe on the river just a few blocks down (in the direction of O'Connell Street). I bought an all day pass there being that I used in the morning and evening (or it might have been a weekly pass..I was there enough to make it worthwhile).

The room I had was quite large, with only 4 beds. The downside was that it did face the street, and there was a lot of traffic noise, so I ended up coming back for a nap every afternoon just to catch up with my sleep. If you can get a room that doesn't face the street you'll surely sleep better. I think Chemist661 also stayed here and might have had an inside room. You might check with him.

I stayed my first, second & last nights (during my October Ireland trip) at the Avalon House. Decent hostel & they had large lockers & safety deposit boxes. (for a fee). I found it fairly quiet & slept pretty decent.

I stayed one night at 4 Courts hostel midway through my one week trip & although I had an inside room on the 4th floor, it was noisy due to a group of people talking in the courtyard until 4AM (it was an area where they could smoke & talk. I asked nicely that I could hear them from the 4th floor through my window. One very good service was they had an overnight laundry service where the hostel will do a load of laundry overnight while you sleep. I think it needs to be turned in by 1030PM and they will have it before 8AM. I think it cost 7 or 8 euros. That part was great because I take only carry on luggage & planned to do my clothes in the middle of my journey.

I stayed at the 4 courts hostel because it was very cheap for the one night and convenient to where my 3 day tour of Southern Ireland was departing from.

Bottom line: I liked staying at the Avalon house. The 4 Courts was well located to Temple bar but was noisy when I was staying there.

This is a great hostel, although I didn't take too much of an interest in seeing the entire place (as I came in at 4pm). I was given a room in the 3rd floor (312), it was a mixed room, at the time of arrival I was sharing it with 2 girls ^ but from the USA :td: :D

The price I paid was 27 euros per night and for one towel 1 euro. I believe internet was 15 minutes 1 euro, which is kinda expensive (I might be wrong, so please correct me).

I managed to sleep comfortable, I had a room overlooking another building (not the river) and I can't comment on the noise level because both times I wanted to sleep I fell asleep immediately since I was too tired.

One thing I did notice that when I was walking back to O'Connell Street, to get an airport shuttle (5 euros one way) I noticed that the Abbey Court (another hostel) is closer (to O'Connell St.) to most of the pubs and restaurants I frequented that night. If I ever decide to go back to Dublin, I''ll probably stay at the Abbey Court, and not because I didn't like the Four Courts (I enjoyed it) but because it was too long of a walk after you're drinking pints and tequila, and going back at 3am.. :D

Btw, I was told that behind the Four Courts area, close to Temple Bar there are lots of junkies (very true) but it wasn't dangerous.
