Ibis is basic but functional. Certainly not what I would call "nice", but clean and generally spotless, yes. There are several in and around Paris. Check out www.accorhotels.com (or something like that) to find them.

Then there is always Priceline. That works reasonably well too in combination with biddingfortravel.com or betterbidding.com .

Jolly Hotels Paris location has some deals on the Jolly Hotels brand website itself, and rates at 99 euros for a rather good property in a very good location is not unusual.

You can start to have a look at:

Its easy to search by location, star rating and price. And very usefull usercomments.

My personal favorite is the Hotel de la Motte Picquet. It is on Ave Motte de Picquet and is in the 7th arr. There was actually a "view" of the top of the Eifel Tower from our bathroom window....It is about 3 blocks from Champs de Mar and the Eifel Tower and right on the corner of Rue Cler a very famous (Rick Steves) market street.

Bon voyage

I've stayed at Hotel Studia right on Boulevard Saint Germain in the 5th quarter. Location is very central and just in front of the Maubert Mutualite metro stop on line 10. I had a room for about $40 with shared bathroom in the hallway (in 2001). Not fancy, but the price was excellent for the location. They don't have a website or internet booking but found some reviews at http://www.travel-library.com/hotels/europe/france/paris/studia.html

I have had good experiences in Paris with priceline name-your-own price hotels. If you aren't familiar with PL then you're paying too much for hotels, period.

I just picked up a 4 star Novotel near Les Halles for 110/night on priceline. (After many, many rebids). I think you could easily pick up the Le Meridien (4 star) in Montparnasse for around $95. There is also some action at 3 star in Montparnasse in the low 80's.

(I opted to pay a little more for Les Halles, because the hotel had gotten good reviews and I stayed at the Le Meridien the last time I was in Paris)

Thanks. Just was wondering what kind of bed did you get? I need a king bed or queen nothing to small.

I've found this book (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0965394476/qid=1139350925/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-8826955-3671366?s=books&v=glance&n=283155) to be excellent for locating inexpensive, good hotels in France and particularly in Paris.

It describes each property listed, recommends room numbers, etc. Most of the hotels listed are independent, small-scale hotels and inns.

I used this book to plan 2.5 weeks in Lyon and Provence and was pleased with all the hotels I found. All were very good deals ($40-$80 per night in 1999), all we ended up choosing had en-suite baths, and most included breakfast.

Here is a hotel (http://www.hotel-leveque.com/index.php) that Rick Steves recommended in his book/website, that I nearly stayed during my last trip to Europe. Rates for 1 person with a shower/toilet is 57 Euro. Not bad....

I have found this to be an excellent guide for major European cities. They do a great job of providing a review of the hotel environment, pricing, and contact information. I think they have about nearly 60 hotels listed for Paris.

They also have hotel reviews for most major european cities.

I bid on Priceline and got the Le Meridien Montparnasse. By default, we got a two-twin room, which is what I wanted. However, I have read reviews that their double-bed rooms are not queens.

I think the Novotel Les Halles provides a double bed and a sofa bed, as the default option.
