There was a limited time promotion early last year where SQ offered a free side trip to various destinations in SE Asia if you were continuing on from Singapore. So no, they're not free unless it's a promotion.

I was actually unaware that you could purchase a side-trip for as little as GBP65.00. I ended up paying SG$600 for a return from SIN-HAN.

SQ to the best of my knowledge has never been proactive in offering deals that really save you money. You have to ask specifically or know abt it to be able to get it. Nonetheless, SQ is not exactly the cheapest at GBP65.00. There are a few budget airlines that will take you to mainly bangkok, hong kong and jakarta. Jetstar, Tiger airways, SQ's low cost carrier arm and Air Asia are the main players.

Can someone elaborate alittle more on this topic. How does this side trip work ? We are scheduled to fly SQ via SIN to AKL in Feb and another side trip would be great.

I agree with UK Flyer. The free side trips are typically part of special promotions, which sometimes change per quarter. For people doing the Kangaroo Route, there are currently no specials on side trips .

IME, the best way to look for cheap deals on SQ is to go on the website and go to the Singapore local site. Under 'Fare Deals', click on the 'More fare deals' hyperlink. You'll find that the cheap fares ex-SIN typically come at some other 'cost', such as no mileage accruability, minimum two passengers travelling together, etc.

I've seen other FTers' recommendations for good travel agents in Singapore; I prefer booking on the web, however (too addicted now to the ability to select seats in advance ;) ).

i have a paid-for booking (see top), and for £65 plus approx £32 tax etc could do a side trip to denpasar, BKK, kL, Penang, Manila Surabaya, Ho Chi Minh (maybe one or two more). **I have checked further and it's Malaysian that offer the free side trips** the advantage of these SQ ones over the budget airlines is that they will reticket you if you miss a connection due to flight delay (same ticket), whereas the budget airlines which offer more destinations at good prices will be separate tickets so you're on your own in case of a delay. (also separate checkin / baggage handling etc)
