I am heading for Rome in April for a citybreak - any recommendations for a reasonably priced pensione or small hotel in the city?

Hotel Julia - http://www.hoteljulia.it
The single, economical rooms are a good deal, at least in the off-season.

Convents are a good choice if you don't mind a curfew:

The Beehive Hostel is almost famous for its superb quality (although I haven't stayed there). It books up well in advance. Both a dorm and private rooms are available: http://www.the-beehive.com/

Hotel Panda is right near the Spanish Steps:

Stayed in Rome for two nights in december (anniversary weekend). Found a very nice hotel near Termini (Central station) and in walking distance to the Colloseum - if you like to walk, that is. Very reasonably priced.
Golden Tulip Mecanate Palace (http://rome-hotels.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187791-d229006-Reviews-Golden_Tulip_Mecenate_Palace-Rome_Lazio.html)

Hi I stayed in Rome for 2 nights in Dec 2005 in Hotel Virgilio

Um.... small room but clean with a nice bathroom. It close to the main trian station and the Colosseum.

Good price tho. Someone from flyertalk.com told me about this hotel, and it's not too bad.

Have a good stay in Rome.

I stayed at the Best Western Villafranche. It is in the Termini area. Very clean, good szie rooms w/ a/c and a great breakfast buffet. It is on a side street (Villafranche) and pretty quiet for Rome. Check the Best Western site. They have some pretty good values.

Cheers
