I just installed XP SP2. reboot. am now doing a windows update and downloading like 29 updates at the moment... but cannot surf the web. No go on Ping either... ipconfig seems ok.
Any ideas? coudl it be dns or hosts file?

Wireless or wired? If the former, try (after the downloads are done and if the subsequent re-boot doesn't solve) right-clicking on the wireless icon and selecting "Repair Connection"

Sounds like a firewall problem. There are probably new versions of ping and MSIE in the service pack, and you have to tell your firewall to allow them access.
It's wireless. But I figured that wouldn't be the problem since I am able to do a windows update successfully from IE but will try nonetheless.
was there anything new in XP2? I've already disabled the windows firewall. I use Zone Alarm Integrity Client Firewall
UPDATE
ok... finished the updates and rebooted a couple of times... now it works... weird. Thx for all the suggestions

I was going to say DNS failure but I would think that would take out the Windows Update site as well. Puzzled...
