Hilton HHonors - Leave hotel early/return to room later

Hello all-
I'm flying out of ONT on Sunday morning at 7am, staying at the airport Doubletree the night before.
There's a slight chance that my ONT-ATL flight will be overbooked... in which case, I very much plan on volunteering.
But rather than stay at the airport until the noon flight to ATL, I was thinking that I'd just go back to the hotel and relax in my room (which should be mine until noon, in theory).
However, I'm wondering what the front desk reaction will be if the maid 'reports' that the room has been vacated.
I'm not really sure how it works when you do express checkout and don't notify the front desk that you're leaving. Do you think I'd have any problems? Do I have a 'right' to that room (or any room) until noon? Anybody have any experience with this scenario?
Thanks in advance!

Why not just explain it to the front desk as you have here? The room should be yours until checkout time or until you actually checkout, if that is before checkout time.

haha
The simplest and best idea.
In all the ways I mulled over in my attempt to game the system, why would I have considered honesty?

If it's a self-check out, most of the time they never know when you leave. At the Hilton's I've stayed at, they slide the bill under your door the morning of departure. They usually have no way of knowing when you leave.
I think contacting the hotel and explaining to them is your best bet ^

The room is yours until you check out or until noon. The maid has no say in it, and I don't think they report anything. As far as they know you are down at breakfast after putting your luggage in the car.

You aren't "gaming the system." You are keeping your room until check-out time. Telling the desk "I need the room until noon even though I'll be removing my luggage earlier, and it may appear vacant" should be fine.
I recently almost did the same thing, as I had booked a "24 hour" room period @ LAX (Four Points) and needed it only for 8 hours initially, but given the chance of cancellation/serious delay, almost didn't check out, thinking I may need to come back and use the room to spend the night - I figured I'd just call the hotel when I was about to board the plane that night.

I checked out and then returned an hour later at Doubletree LAX - had no problem getting back my room for another 2 hrs. It had not been cleaned yet though.
Or as suggested just don't check out in the morning. Call from the airport if you have to, I don't think formal check out is really needed unless you worry about unexpected charges.

Wouldn't hurt to hang the DND sign on the door handle as you leave as a precaution.

Just call the front desk once you're on the plane and explain that you were in a hurry and forgot to check-out. I do this sometimes because I am in a hurry.
If you're not on the plane, then just go back and relax in your room. If you're worried about the maid, just put the DND hanger on the door. You wouldn't be the first person to "forget" to take the DnD sign off the door after checking out.

You can just dont' return your room key cards. You don't need to check out neither. If you need your room back, you have keys. If you don't, the keys will be deactiviated after 12pm. Just make sure your departure day is correct when you book.
and no explanation to anybody.
