On the SA web site under Voyager promotions they are advertising Voyager miles at R0.13 plus VAT (up to 50K miles per member). Is this worth it?

Typical use of mileage for me it would be purchasing a business class ticket CPT/LHR. In Z this costs about R22 000 and a mileage keeper award would be 110k miles. So value of miles R0.20 (less the time value of money!). Of course if used for upgrades (when you can get them!) the value goes up to about R0.40 per mile and more. Anyone else tempted?

Aside: the management of award seats has become so erratic and unpredictable on SA that it is almost impossible to plan a trip using them. And without Mathias' tool I can no longer keep tabs on them from moment to moment and I feel bad to nag my agent all the time given that she will get very little out of an award ticket - even an upgrade. Anyone else having better luck managing this?

can't say we have had much luck. we tend to try the later flight when flying jnb to lhr, as this seems to often have more space. Could I ask what you were referring to when you mention "mathias's tool". Sorry if its an obvious question...

Could I ask what you were referring to when you mention "mathias's tool". Sorry if its an obvious question...Ah, there was a time not too long ago, a wonderful golden age, when you could download a nifty application, developed by a certain Mathias, and search for specific fare buckets on specific flights. This included the "hidden" codes such as those for SA awards (R,D etc.). By assiduously checking up on this tool I was able find flights with the best award seat availability or to spot award seats as they fleetingly became available and instruct my TA to grab 'em. Sadly Mathias left the industry and could no longer support his availability tool. :( A search of the FT site will bring up loads of mentions of the availability tool - but at this stage such a search only has historical or sentimental value.
