You should call and ask... The requirements are much lower in Europe than in the US (where you can pay for almost everything with an Amex card).
I called and asked, that's how I got the Centurion card and I'm so far happy with it...

I'm not familiar with AmEx, but I was sent an offer saying I was pre-approved for Gold. Is this the process: Use Gold for a while, get invited to Platinum, and so on and so forth?
The ultimate question... should I get that Gold card then?

The Platinum CSR will try to make you believe that you need a Platinum card in order to be invited for a Centurion card but it seems it isn't a prerequisite maybe not even a Gold card. What counts is the total amount you charge on your Amex cards.
As for me I called and asked for the Centurion card after having held the Platinum one for 5 days...

I wonder if you can actually be "pre-selected" by luck for the Centurion card without spending the $250K a year. If that even possible? Lets say AMEX (Platinum) see you spending a good fair amount each month and your payments are perfect, can you actually be lucky enough to be invited to the Centurion card?

I`ve been platinum for about 5 years,my spending about 2000 Euro/month,most of it spent on private travels, only 5* hotels.Got my invitation in Oct. 2005 and, after doing investigations on flyertalk, decided to join. Now,I`m happy with the status, because the upgrades are great compared to the yearly fee of 1000 Euro.

It was in October 2004,and yes, after reading all the posts on FT,I was surprised that they had offered the card to me.But it`s the spending pattern I think, and I`ve lifted my spending since that up to 5000 Euro/m,only private spending,of course. If we could use the Amex for taxes in Germany, the 250K wouldn`t be a problem.

Is the fee in Europe officially down to 1'000 Euros/year for the Centurion? Nobody se"ems to be paying the 2'500 or 2'000 Euros fee.

Well spending with an Amex card in France requires the will to do so in the sense that you can buy most of the things you might need with an Amex card but you need to investigate which merchants accept it so it can be quite bothersome sometimes...
It happened to me many times that I didn't buy something I wanted right away because I couldn't use my Amex card to pay for it and ended finding the same article somewhere I could use my Amex card...
But then maybe I hang out too much on FT and am addicted to miles...

Hypovereinsbank, they basically require some form of ensurance - so cash or whatever else in their bank, 75k is the minimum, so not that much, though they do prefer over 100k in assets at the bank.

...which doesn't help as there isn't a min spend in the UK :p Generally though it is perfect payment history (on Plat Charge Card); hold it for a year and; I was told about 11 months ago (by Amex) that £1500 to £2000 was sufficient to get Centurion, however I would imagine this would have grown by now.
Also, they've issued too many in the UK, so no one is getting it at the moment (I wonder if this applies to IDC/IEC?). Hopefully invitations will be sent out in the next couple months ;)

Platinum CS told me that there is a requirement for 130,000GBP spending. And that would be converted to Euros/Dollars also in case of IEC/IDC.
But it is quite possible that IEC/IDC Platinum CS is not aware about the actual situation.

Hopefully that is not the case, otherwise I am way off :( I think it is unrealistic to expect an alignment with the US, as it is much harder to get a balance like that in the UK (i.e. we can't pay our taxes, rent etc with American Express)...

I asked about the IEC one time, and the people at Centurion sent me an application form - I was only really thinking about getting a green one (since there's almost total overlap between IEC and UK Centurion perks) but they sent through the IEC/IDC Centurion application.
It does request bankers' references, and one of the questions for your banker is something like 'would you lend this individual €100,000 on an unsecured basis?'.

It does request bankers' references, and one of the questions for your banker is something like 'would you lend this individual €100,000 on an unsecured basis?'.
In case of International cards, they seem to be asking for bankers' references all the time and they actually also check them. Platinum application form although does not have any questions regarding if the banker would lend anything.
I provided them my banking contact and the next thing was that my bank called me and alerted that Amex is violating my privacy (Finnish laws do not allow banks to give such information Amex was asking to 3rd parties). In the end Amex was just happy with the confirmation from my bank that I am their customer and didn't want any detailed information about my relationship with the bank.
Also, after all the detailed background checking they told me that they did that by mistake. They didn't know that I was already Amex customer in Finland and most of the background checking was unnecessary. They didn't remember to ask about my previous cards in the phone and I didn't notice to tell about it to them while submitting all the required information.
Maybe detailed background checking for Centurion is only required when a new customer is applying the card - Amex already knows quite a much about the old customers so if they choose to invite an International Platinum card member to Centurion then I would guess that it would be just waste of time to perform a detailed background check.

I think in the UK they also look closely at what you are spending money on i.e. to determine if you are likely to use the services they flog - in particular are you spending money on travel and hospitality. When I went black 3 or 4 years ago my montly spend across various Amex cards was 3 - 5k per month on average, but I had a history of top hotels (paid for mostly by work) business class airfares (ditto) and lots of restaurant meals, some of them over £2000 (paid for by work). I think there are very few people out there who regularly do this and thats what presses the buttons at Amex. I'd also been a card holder since that late 80s which helps. if you don't travel alot (for buisness or pleasure) you won't get your moneys worth any way.
I know this is selfish but I'm glad numbers are restricted, as more cards equals less exclsuivity and diluted benefits, service. Service is very mixed (like anywhere it depends who you get on the day) and the benefits are slowly diluting. However, what is notable is that the fee in the UK hasn't gone up. As far as I'm concerned they can double the fee if they keep the exclusivity, keep service levels up and maintain or enhance the benefits

No, that is not selfish. Of course there should be always a restriction. Otherwise the card would be just another card with a different yearly fee. To keep Centurion as it is today, requires that it is also restricted.
