Budget Travel - Vienna airport

Will fly to Vienna at the end of the month and will get in arund 21.00. Have a colleague arriving at 06.30 and then we need to head off for a photo shoot subject to weather.
What I want to know is:
1) Is it worth getting a hotel near by to try and get some sleep and if so for the short amount of time is there anywhere cheap.
2) Bearing in mind that if the weather is no good we could end up waiting around for 2 days before we move to Innsbruck for more photo shoots, this would mean two of us sharing a room all be it we are good mates.
3) How far is airport from downtown if we have to amuse ourselves.
Any other tips welcomed.
Thanks in advance.

1) are you driving or training? if it's the latter, why not go in to town for the night?
3) 15-20 minutes on the new CAT train. 9 euros each way, if memory serves.

It's been 20 years since I've been there, but the train ride into town was very pleasant. Unless there's a hotel at the airport, a ride into town sounds like a better way to spend the night than at the airport.
OTOH, the train may not run early enough in the a.m. for you to meet your mate the next morning.

There IS a hotel at the airport, but it's quite expensive (well over 100 euros/night) and since this IS the budget travel forum...
The train definitely starts running very early.

There is Aston hotel infront of the airport. If you want cheap you can take the CAT (city airport train) that will take you about 15-20 minutes non stop to city center Landstrasse. From there you can check the hilton hotel if its cheaper.

Its been 20 days since I've been there, but the train ride into town is still very pleasant. :D
This is budget, so forget the CAT. :D It is 7.5 E one way. Right next to it downstairs in the basement is the S7 train. 3.5 E one way. Goes on a parallel track with the CAT. Not quite as fancy rail cars as CAT, but bright clean cars like all the great public transit in Wien. S7 takes about 10 min longer than the CAT. 4 E for 10 min? What a rip. Who thought of that one?
I will have to double check my map, but I think it drops you at Wein Middle or North where you catch the subway. 20 minutes on the subway takes you anywhere in town. Wien has an incredible subway and tram system. Very easy to get around. I'll go get my ticket stub in a few min.
I stayed at a great place right across the street from the South train station. With the tram stops and subway entrance between the hotel and train station if you can believe it. Public transport does not get any more convenient than that.
Are you flying or training to Innsbruck?

Thanks everyone but keep them coming.
We will be either with the team cars to Innsbruck or if it packed with sweaty cyclists then we will go by train and meet them there.
I think we go to Clas or Cles from there on the Italian side and then down to Tuscanny for more phot shoots. Then back to Taiwan.
I called my mate and he said that it might be worth getting the hotel in Vienna and chilling out for the day and he can have a shower and freshen up and then for sure there will be no hanging around as if we dont book a hotel sods law says we will be struggling to get one and then we wish we had checked FT.
Any info on hotels and rates that wll be great.
Cheers
Steve

Can highly recommend Dr. Geisler's Pension. It's just a few steps from the Schwedenplatz U-stop. A bud and I were there in November...cost 60 euros total...the room was designed to hold up to 6 people in the summer -- basically a two-room suite with bath and shower in the room, toilet just outside the door, shared with another room (that was vacant while we were there). Includes breakfast.
There is Aston hotel infront of the airport.
It was an Astron, but NH took them over, so it is now an NH.

Hi. Just for the start - sorry for my English. Itīs not my native language.
I am living in the Vienna area and you should visit the city - itīs worth.
For hotel information and any other info about Vienna just visit the official homepage of the Vienna City Administration. Itīs also available in English.

I agree. Vienna should not be missed, even for just a night. The Hotels at the Airport will be more expensive. I think there is a youth hostel downtown, or some reasonable accomodations. Plus you'll be near some interesting night spots...or at least in my time. Is the Bermuda Drei-Ecke still a place to go at night?

I will arrive into VIE late 4th and my colleague will arrive very early 5th, so I decided not to pay 125 euro for a room which I will only use for about 5 hours. I will find a hotel to go to downtown vienna 5th as we have to be in Salzburg 6th and then Innsbruck 7th, so any tips on nice but cheap place to stay in Vienna or the other towns will be greatly appreciated.

As I said above, the Pension I stayed at in November was great, especially for the location and price. Although Vienna has a lot of high-end accommodations and is an expensive city, there is a high number of mid-priced (40-80euros) 2-3 star hotels all over the center. The link given above should help you find something. Or if you can give a little more info on where, exactly, you want to stay...otherwise, Vienna is a very large city with hundreds of accommodation options, so a general casting of the net is probably not the best course.
