For those of you keeping track, the Trop has extended the date they will accept reservations (again). It is now April 13th.

Um... so what? Are they finally going to implode the place?

They constantly extend the closing date. The official line is it will close for a major overhaul, but the rumor is it will close for good.

Time will tell.

Aztar Corp (the owners of the Tropicana) did a really good job on the Havana Quarter shopping mall and hotel tower at the Tropicana Atlantic City. I have always wondered why they let their Las Vegas property go to pot.

"While I don't think the company will attempt a massive project similar in scope to MGM's Project CityCenter or Boyd Gaming's (NYSE: BYD) Echelon, it has filed a request with Clark County planners for 2,750 rooms and has hired Tony Marnell, the same man who built the Rio and the Bellagio, to come up with some ideas. It is possible that the company will develop the northern half of its 34-acre property and then bring in a joint-venture partner for the second phase."

Wouldn't say anything is definate with the Tropicana & Aztar. They've been pulling this 'not taking reservations' on and off for the last few years.

There's also some misleading information about the Trop having plans on file for the 2750 rooms.

Caught the story from a Vegas local on the LVA forums a while back, and it is only for a remodel of the property that would add 40' to an existing tower, and 200 rooms to the current 2550, along with 160,000 sq. ft added to casino and related space.

If Marnell is just coming on board to redesign the entire property, I doubt the plans, pricing, approvals and financing would all be in place for a mid April shutdown.

You'll be seeing continued rolling dates for the Trop not taking reservations for a while.

I think they just can't make a decision, and keep changing their mind between whether to just keep it open or close and remodel. With the changes to San Remo and Stardust, the pressure just continues to increase.

I will be staying there for the first time in March, didn't know they were on death watch. Interesting to see what kind of shape everything is and how the service is.

Not being able to make up their corporate mind has been Aztar's problem for maybe a decade. They would move the tables back and forth from one side of the club to another, put in bright lighting, put in a show inside the casino, tear out the moving walkway and put in shopping kiosks. They have usually (at least in LV) settled for whatever is loudest, most annoying and/or most inconvenient, all while letting their hotel towers deteriorate.
