Starwood Preferred Guest - Earning SPG Points With Credit Card In Canada?
Happy New Year Everyone,
What credit card options are available to me in Canada to earn SPG points for purchases? Any reviews on any of them?
I've currently have an Aerogold card and an American Exp. Card With Rewards. Can't redeem aeroplan points for SPG and the redepemption rate for SPG points with the AMEX is ridiculious (6 points = $6 in charges PER SPG point)...
Any advice?
Best,
Nasta.

Get yourself a MBNA Starwood Mastercard. Issued by MBNA bank Canada.
Do a search and you will find some lenghty tread's on the subject.
Basically 1 SPG point per C$2 and a bunch of bonuses.

For the MBNA SPG card, it's basically $1:1 SPG point for the first $30K. If it's your first year, you get an additional 5K first spend and 5K first stay bonus.

I thought the 5K bonus is for every year.

I believe the only bonuses after the first year are the 5K pts/$10000 of spending. The good news is that they are already posting as they should.
Canadian bonuses seem better than my Starwood Amex bonuses. Are US addresses eligible for Canadian cards?

Isn't that ironic? Usually it's the other way around. ;)
The MBNA SPG card isn't much better. The normal accrual rate is $2 CAD:1 Starpoint. It's the 5K bonus points/$10K CAD spend that brings it up to parity. However, these bonus points end at $30K of spending, which is low for a lot of people.
The card is only for Canadian residents. https://www.lg0.net/starwood/q1cluster/index.cfm?mc=SPGHOM&IM=SPG_HP_Banner_Q12006_PNW

Just be aware that the MBNA Starwood Mastercard does not allow you to convert points to Aeroplan either. Although I was able to sweet talk my way through a transfer last month (and got the 5,000 mile bonus for transferring 20,000 points) my file is now flagged so that it can't happen again. SPG says that MBNA made all cardholders aware, but I have every piece of correspondence every sent to me by MBNA and I've read through it five times, and still can't find the reference.

Not as long as you use the card on a regular basis...just like with the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express.
