Do you have any suggestion to stay cheap for a week. Thanks!!! MichaelJFK Jan 7, 06, 6:21 am Not sure what your budget is but I have always been able to get good rates at the Eaton Hotel. They have varied room levels but I get the run of the mill room, which is small, but clean and the Hotel is in a good location (Near the Night and Jade Markets. There is a fabulous roof-top pool/healthclub that offers great views. ernie8575 Jan 7, 06, 8:47 am We stayed at the YMCA Salisbury which is ideally located and next to the Peninsula hotel. It was very reasonable and a wonderful place to stay and they even upgraded our room to a suite with a harbor view. Would stay there again. They have a web site: http://www.ymcahk.org.hk/sales/html/hst001e.htm Hotel also easy access to and from airport. See one, don't like it, go to the next one. Mirador is nicer than Chungking, by rule. I stayed at the YHA on Mt Davis, closer to the Macao Ferry Terminal. Cheap (sub-US$10/night) but had to take a special bus from the Ferry Terminal to get there (or a taxi). Serial Traveler Jan 9, 06, 2:00 am Just a heads up. Not sure what your travel dates are, but the last two weeks of April are typically more expensive than the beginning of April due to the influx of travelers for the Canton Fair in Guangzhou and the Hong Kongs Gift Fair. Safe travels! ~cj gary_nj Jan 11, 06, 12:13 pm The recommendations here so far (spanning from Chungking Mansions to the Eaton Hotel) are pretty broad... perhaps a clearer definition of how "cheap" you are looking for would help... One other point of information for you... When I travel to HK, I would not dream of going as "downscale" as Chungking Mansions, but I also would consider the Eaton or the Salisbury YMCA to be a splurge. For my budget, I usually like the Evergreen Hotel (www.evergreenhotel.com). Nice location, clean and quiet rooms, close to transit and the airport bus stop. Just one more to consider. emailkid Jan 11, 06, 10:33 pm <snip> Mirador is nicer than Chungking, by rule. <snip> I've always wanted to visit Hong Kong, and after reading about Chungking Mansion, gotta find a good fare there :D EmailKid civicmon Jan 12, 06, 1:18 am I've always wanted to visit Hong Kong, and after reading about Chungking Mansion, gotta find a good fare there :D EmailKid Best Indian food I ever had was in that building. It's a bit on the seedy side if you're a single woman, if you're a guy it's not too bad, just man up and you'll walk out fine. Businesses are mostly Indian-owned there. I suggest you watch the movie Chungking Express, not only is it one of the best movies ever made, IMO, it's set there. Good knowledge of HK society helps understand the film better though. wandering_fred Jan 13, 06, 2:50 am If you need a respite from the crowds, don't mind ferry rides and want to see rural :) HK, then Silvermine Bay Hotel (***) on Lantau might fit in. Breakfast is included. The Mui Wo Cooked Food Market has ocean front seating. taxi (blue) there is about 150HK$ from airport and will be an interesting ride Happy wandering Fred |
