I am considering taking my family of five to Singapore & Phuket next Christmas and New Year's. Can anyone recommend any child-friendly activities in either location--such as amusement parks or water parks. We took our kids to Hong Kong and Australia two years ago and they had a great time. We'd like to replicate that feeling.

Thanks.

Depending on you kids ages -lots to do. Singapore - Zoo, Night Safari, Sentosa, Jurong Bird park, crocodile farm, water park, shopping and of course eating especially at Hawker centres.
Phuket- beaches, elephant rides, go-karts, more shopping -fakes etc, gibbon santuary, waterfalls and more food

I dont want to disappoint you but amusement parks in this region doesnt quite measure up to what you have closer to home.

My suggestion for Phuket would be Phuket Fantasea, while for SIN the Night Safari is quite interesting.

Try Sentosa in Singapore. You can take the MRT to the cablecars and ride over to the island, my 3 & 6 year old girls loved it. (The regular link: http://www.sentosa.com.sg/ isn't working from work but wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentosa has good info. There is a tram around the island, a butterfly garden, aquarium, virtual reality rides, nature trail, etc. Lots of good stuff and will take most of a day.

When in SG remember to eat at hawker stands (large pavilion areas with 50 or so food vendors in them) - not restaurants, unless the kids have to have western food.

As for Phuket, most of my experiences there were in another (single) life, but unless the kids are real little or real worldly, steer clear of Patong beach during evening hours.

You might find Wikitravel a bit more relevant: http://wikitravel.org/en/Singapore/Sentosa

Word of warning though: Sentosa is as big a tourist trap as they get, and much of the island currently resembles a construction site because of the monorail construction. The bus services for getting around are also confusing for the same reason. Things should get better by the end of this year though when they open up the monorail...

Went to Singapore during the holiday vacation and would highly recommend the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari for your kids. The Zoo is one of the best in the world and pretty clean in terms of the bathrooms and walkways. Also, for every 10-min. walk, there would be an air-conditioned relaxation pagoda for people to rest up from the heat. As for getting to the zoo, it cost less than 20 Singapore Dollars for a taxi from the Harbor area malls - definitely worth it for a family.

The Night Safari is a must as well. You get to see the free-ranging animals at night. I would recommend taking the tram and doing the walking trails. Spray with insect repellent beforhand though.
