Comair / Delta Connection Flight from MSN to CVG RJ in Y 07A,07B
Flight departed on time at 7:00 am, and we arrived at 8:09 am at CVG. This was a CRJ operated by COMAIR. Beverage and snack service was performed, and the choices were the usual crackers, peanuts, or granola. For a 1 hour flight it was pretty decent. The service was particularly friendly for this time of the morning. The flight attendant was clearly not a Northern climate person -- she was wrapped so tight in her rain coat / winter coat...
Delta Flight 511 from CVG to HNL 764 in F 03A, 03B
When we arrived we had to navigate from the commuter gates in the A concourse to the B concourse. I really dislike the buses that move people from the two concourses it just seems so inefficient with fuel prices as they are. I guess that was not the thought when they laid out the airport. We arrived at the gate to find the bird a 764 sitting there. This being my first time on a 767-400 from Delta I was a bit apprehensive.
As we sat down in the boarding area the general agents were announcing upgrades to first class for $250 over the PA. That was okay I guess, but I wonder how many frequent fliers could have been upgraded, and loyalty gained on a 9 hour flight with domestic F seats. Boarding was done by zones as usual, and it was a little guilty pleasure walking up in Zone 1 in front of the massed line. It was a full flight in economy apparently, but people paying up front were few. I guess I should have been better in the coupon connection, and traded UA stuff from a couple of PMU’s. But the money I spent on the first class tickets would turn out to be well spent. I am writing this from my seat 03B right now, and I can tell you it isn’t horrible – but by no means would I say this is a F class product. I am glad I was able to switch to the 763 from HNL to ATL on the way back. I am looking forward to the 60 inches in the BusinessElite seats.
The service on board has been excellent, and the flight crew has been exemplary. They have provided the service of airlines of old. The head purser, and his crew have made me think this was the Delta of old – a class act to be followed. We were addressed by our names, and our meal choices were asked in order of seating unlike United which does it by status. There was somehow something egalitarian about that solution. Our jackets were hung with care, and pre-takeoff drinks were offered. My fiancée and I both chose a white wine – a nice way to get the trip started. Yes out of plastic cups, but who cares when the service is great. Our glass was NEVER empty. We had to tell our flight attendant to stop otherwise we’d be drunk before we got airborne. Yes, for those who care the flight crew as older, but they really understand service, and worked hard throughout the whole flight.
Shortly after takeoff lunch was served. Our choices were steak with mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes, or chicken with yams and some kind of “green vegetable.” I chose the chicken, and it was okay – the portions as mention by others leave something to be desired. The green salad accompanied it was dry and uninspired, but its airplane food; of course the highlight was the chocolate or caramel sundaes made at your seat. Unfortunately, my camera was stowed at the time otherwise I would be sharing some of the pictures. My fiancee’s vegetarian dish of risotto with vegetables looked great. Again, the service was king – this crew really had their act together it was one of the most enjoyable flights I’ve ever had on any airline. Kudos to the crew of DL 511 – a flight after all is an experience, and the crew has a big deal of what that means.
I hope my return flight is just as great. Better seats, and I am hoping just as good service. I remain hopeful, but we’ll see. We are about 4000 miles from Honolulu right now, and the sun is perfect outside. What a way to travel – irregardless of where we are sitting we need to realize how lucky our generation is. Air travel is affordable, and people can see the world.
Back to the trip – yes first class has that cramped feeling as if Leo Mullin’s ghost is present on board screaming more revenue per square inch on board the plane. But you don’t really notice it – I imagine if a group of screaming kids were in first it would be a truly horrid experience. The flight attendants did a nice job of directing traffic and providing snacks throughout the flight. We sat next to a Boeing manager who worked in their naval division on “radar” boats. Some kind of experimental thing – it seemed somewhat surreal sitting next to a Boeing guy who didn’t know much about planes but boats.
There was a little turbulence as we left the continental US, but all in all so far it has been clear skies and sun. I guess Hawaii is beckoning us forward on journey. They say that you need to leave your troubles behind when you go to Hawaii that certainly seems true as you see the sun rays dancing across the ocean below.
We are now being bombed with crackers and granola – you’d think Delta was in it with Quaker Oats or General Mills. It’s a bit rough on the stomach, but hey its better than nothing.
The snack prior to arrival was the chicken wrap -- which I don't mind. Flame away at its somewhat healthy; or at least let me think that. We arrived, and our luggage was the last piece off the belt. First one off last one away -- a universal constant.
Our flight to LIH was a blur other then for a 20 minute flight they somehow served beverages -- I had the guava juice. Some of our Hawaiin based flyertalkers can vouch for if this is regular or not. I enjoyed the flight. Wearily got to the hotel at around 8:30 pm. 30 plus hours on the road not fun, but hey I'm in Paradise. More to come.
