Out West, Aussie Style

...The southwestern corner of the state, including Perth and the gorgeous Margaret River area, faces west across the Indian Ocean, enjoying a Mediterranean climate and its perquisites - superb locally produced wines, wonderful food and a relaxed way of life. Plus world-class museums, uncrowded white sand beaches, soaring hardwood forests and abundant wildflowers in springtime (meaning September, of course).

Perth reminds me of San Diego. It revels in its location along a lakelike stretch of the meandering Swan River, overlooked by the 1,000-acre Kings Park, whose lush gardens provide a popular setting for picnics and weddings and games of many sorts in a city that loves living outdoors.

Take a stroll there, admire the city's shimmering postmodern skyscrapers, rising from the flatlands below like Houston's, and then follow my wife, Betsey, and me to the soft, rolling countryside of the Margaret River...

I have always said that San Diego reminds me of Brisbane, although Perth and Brisbane are quite similar in atmosphere.
