Travel Technology - Yet another Intel WiFi NIC problem... it won't DHCP!

So, my wife, who's been using a Vaio PCG-V505EX for over a year now, starts complaining that she can't get online and is having lots of problems. I immediately start thinking virii/spyware and go on a bughunt. No dice. I update everything... still doesn't help. Then, I start looking at the networking config and notice that the WiFi adapter (an Intel 2200) never leases an IP. I set a static IP and everything works PERFECTLY. I go back to DHCP and nada. I update drivers, uninstall, reinstall, EVERYTHING. Then I go searching on the 'net.

Turns out that the Intel NIC is simply incompatible with certain access points and WILL NOT DHCP under certain circumstances (I.E. when using WEP or WPA). While we were using WPA it worked fine but as my current VoIP phones only do WEP I'm stuck! I switched to WPA and the NIC did just fine. Turned off encryption... everything works. Back to WEP and ZILCH! Fortunately she doesn't take her notebook with her often but when she does i'll have to remember to put it back into DHCP mode. WHAT A PAIN!!! If I didn't like the access point so much (Netgear Prosafe WG102) I'd go get another Cisco!

Have you tried going to intel.com and downloading the latest driver? I did that and downloaded the Intel wifi utility which I use exlcusively now. It's better than the XP SP2 utility, IMHO.

Yep... 9.0.3.0 installed... and I switched to the PROset WiFi client. No dice. :( My next step is to hack the notebook and swap the card for an Atheros... I'm GOING to fix this, even if she doesn't care. It's kinda like having an itch you can't scratch. Drives me NUTS to have problems i can't fix...

Teach her how to do the switch herself.

Maybe 9.0.3.0 has bugs and you should downgrade. I'm running 9.0.1.21 without any problems, WEP, WPA2, etc. I have an Intel 2915ABG.
