Asia - How to book this (Open Jaw?) trip?

For all you asia gurus:
I am planning to fly from Hawaii-Asia-US. I am guessing this is an open jaw trip. Is it? I have a couple of questions. Is it cheaper to fly this way instead of the usual US-Asia-US? How do I go about minimizing my costs? Would a consolidator sell this kind of a ticket?

Keeping in mind that I has not tried to actually search for a fare on this routing, I would guess that this is going to be MORE expensive because of the Hawaii origin. If booking it as Hawaii-Asia-U.S. Mainland looks ugly, you can try nested or throw-away round-trips. For example,
HNL to LAX (don't use the return)
LAX to Asia on a different booking and at a good sale price
Also, try various one-way segments on Asian carriers to get from Hawaii to an Asia destination that is also a cheap RT from Asia to the U.S. mainland. In theory, this is exactly the same as doing a three-leg multi-destination search on an on-line booking site, but they often will not find the cheapest possible routing.
And try a consolidator, too.

to get an idea of cost see http://www.airtreks.com and plan out the journey.
But you might check with united about whether they would consider a trip like this as being a single award, with the open leg being a little wider opening, but in a sense, no different than chicago to singapore and back to new york, with a somewhat more open leg.
my personal guess is that you'd be able to buy two one way journeys cheaper, from consolidators in hawaii and in bangkok or hong kong or some such.
