Travel Technology - Razr Help needed (contacts question)

Generally reasonably tech savvy, but have remained a cell phone ludite until now (too many years tethered to phones and pager). Finally am giving up my ancient Panasonic phone for a new slick Razr. Would like to know if there is any way to get contacts from Outlook or Palm into this phone, or do I need to input them all individually?
Also note that this phone gets very hot during what seems like a short time to me (the 30 minutes I was reading the manual and trying to learn how to work it). Normal? Should I take it back?
Many thanks. Happy New Year to all. :D

Mine came with a CD for Motorola Mobile Phone Tools (MPT). I have to tell you, it is a wretched bit of software, but did the job... eventually. I could not get it to sync with Outlook 2000 so I exported from Outlook to a CSV file, imported the CSV into MPT, then synced the phone with MPT. It did bring over all numbers and e-mail addresses correctly.

MPT may or may not be included depending where you get the phone from, but yes, you can sync with Outlook or even Lotus Notes. In addition to the software (which can also be purchased & downloaded online) you'll need either a USB cable or Bluetooth adapter (for your pc).
I've noticed the Razr get warm while charging. Never noticed it, "hot."
BTW: My spouse & one daughter have Razr's - I have a V360 (for Edge).
The charger cable should be all you need to connect to MPT. I have a Motorola V505 and have the regular data cable, which works on and off. THe Motorola UI is really poor when compared to other brands.
I have had absolutely no luck syncing the phone with MPT via Bluetooth. I have tried two different adapters without success, the most recent was a D-Link and it said I did not have the license. to use it with that device.
Almost giving up with Bluetooth. I know it works with the phone for certain things, like headsets and transferring to another phone, but not with MPT...

Mine did not come with MPT (special deal at Cingular for $99 so no software or handsfree device). Thanks for tip on how to get it.

Ok - to connect with a non-motorola BT adapter:
1) Pair the phone using the BT stack which came with your adapter (or the WXP SP2 stack from Microsoft, as appropriate).
2) Launch MPT.
3) Hit CANCEL on the connection dialog.
4) When the application starts, select menu->settings & connection - choose the Bluetooth modem created when you paired the phone.

You can purchase from BVRP software (bvrp.com) - there should be a link on the Motorola site.
Many more details on howardforums.com.
Note: after posting this I received an for 35% off BVRP software good for MPT. Says it's good for 1 week, but doesn't give a date. PM me if interested.

How would the charger cable do this? Thanks for sparing me the work of trying it with Bluetooth, which is what I was going to try....

The charger cable is a USB cable and provides data as well as power.

I think you might be confusing the OP, as the charger cable in theretail RAZR is a wall charger, and not a PC cable. For data you'll need to get a USB-mini USB cable.

Thanks ScottC. That was exactly my confusion.

Thanks to all for the info. I have ordered the software and will report back on this for future users :D
Does anyone have a helpful link or any better user info than the miserable manual that came with it? Looked around on the web but could only find an electronic version of the same miserable one I have in paper.

As for the USB data cable, it can also be used to charge the phone from your PC.
As for the manual, did you try downloading one from motorola.com? If that is no good, then you'll need to read webforums like http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=38

I'd go to the Motorola forum at Howardforums and start with the FAQ & links.

When I got my Motorola Mobile Phone Tools (MPT) CD-ROM (from an eBay auction--it came along eith a cable) I found it was three versions out of date---by using the Live Update three times. It doesn't immediatley install the latest version--you have to keep trying the Live Update until it says you have the latest. The latest is version 4.04, which requires a 52 MByte download.

Thanks redburgundy (always oneo of my favorites, although it was a white burgundy for dinner tonight...). I figured this out just this afternoon when I had a failed attempt at using it and then installed the upgrade. The first time around it spent a long time seeming to import my contact info from exported Outlook file, but when I went to find it on the razr it was nowhere to be found. (Even the teenage daughter couldn't find it, so I figure it is not there.) Now that I have the latest version I still need to get it to import some Outlook exported data.

Sorry. Mine is a foreign phone and came with the USB cable and Motorola software. I always charge my phone from the USB port on my laptop.
I didn't realize they don't all come with the USB cables and software.

Well, this has been quite the adventure. Incredibly time consuming, but this is one of those times where all of my tech gadgets are changing (new phone, new Palm, and unfortunately, a massively new email system at the University of California which attempts to switch us all from POP based systems to web-based Exchange).
Mobile Tools is not a walk in the park by my standards. Got my contact data into the phone (using my Powerbook), but attempting to use the MT application on the PC to access and change the data has not worked at all. No data shown. I know it is there; I can see it on the Razr. Have version 3.23 -after an update. Does anyone know of a concise manual for this??

Fussed around a bit more and got this to work. Contacts all downloaded to phone. Thanks to all for the advice. Am enjoying the Razr as it turns out. Very nice feeling phone and slips into pockets easily. I use it exclusively as a phone (as opposed to MP3 player, camera etc.) and it certainly does a fine job at that.
