Other Middle East and Africa Frequent Flyer Programs - GF Economy A340 v A330
Am planning a trip on Gulf Air LHR-BAH in Feb and just wondered about the A340 v A330. There seems to be two daily flights, one on each type and I've heard that the A330's are newer and have better Business and First set-ups. But I wondered how this translates to down the back? Does anyone know the main differences? I have seen a few photos of the A340 economy seats and there appears to be no PTV - are there PTVs on the A330? Any other info would be appreciated.

330 is light years ahead. There is a PTV (VOD, I believe), and the cabin is fresher and much newer - no question about it, go for the 330 flight

The ex SQ leased A340's GF currently uses do have PTV. I think thats version A., Version B does not. I think in the GF timetable the version (without PTV) in Y is referred to as '340-300'..the newer Version A(with PTV in Y) is referred to as '340' only. The Y class on the A330 are the same seats only refurbished with new fabric, the carpets, bulkheads, curtains and pannels are all new. The seats even though not updated as with F and J seats are quite comfortable and sophisticated as far as Y seats go. Foot rest and head rest wings are part of the deal.
Enjoy your flight.

Thanks for the replies. I'm looking on Expedia, and the flights I'm planning to take are the outbound (LHR-BAH) morning flight (departs 09:30) is described as "A340". Now, as per Cedar Jet's very helpful reply, this would seem to indicate the newer version A340 with PTV. I would think that GF consider LHR to be a premium route, so is it unreasonable to assume that they would put their upgraded A340's on this route before other routes?
Edited to add: Unfortunately this flight appears on the GF website as "A340-300" as opposed to other flights (e.g. to SYD) which appear as A340. Therefore I assume that it is the non-PTV version of the A340 which serves this flight to LHR. :(
On the way back, also the dayflight (departs BAH 13:10) is the A330, so no problem there.
I think I'll go with these as I'd prefer the dayflight outbound to the overnight in Y, even if I do end up on a non-PTV A340 I've always got my iPod and a book! Furthermore, and rather sadly I'll admit, I've never been on an A340 before, so it would be good to "tick it off" the list! ;) Thanks for all your help, much appreciated. ^

That's what I would be hoping too. However, sadly, it rarely seems to be the case. I too, prefer the evening flights between ME and UK because it allows me to nicely to connect to AC859 leaving LHR at 905pm. Even EK uses a "supbar" 777-300 on the evening flight.
If you don't mind posting the date of your BAH-LHR flight, I can check if it is the old or new configuration just to confirm, or you can just do it yourself: Go to www.travelocity.com, make a dummy booking in First Class. When you get to the seat map, 2x1x2 configuration in F = PTV's in Y, whereas 2x2x2 configuration = no PTV's in Y
