Has anyone tried one of these? It takes a GPRS card and creates a wifi hotspot anywhere. NYT says Willie Nelson uses one on his tour bus...

i'm curious if it is a good alternative to paying the hotel internet tax.

If you're even halfway handy you can build one of these yourself using readily available parts for about half the price. Google Soekris. I wouldn't go GPRS though... UMTS, EVDO or at worst 1xRTT... even EDGE is too slow and GPRS drives me insane.

Yes I have tried it, but it doesn't really offer much more than a cellphone and bluetooth connection can offer. It is handy if you really really need a wifi connection to the big big internet. Like Kanebear said; it is much cheaper to build your own.

thanks.
i've tried bluetooth to my imate jam and i've found that the jam tends to 'hang up' the gprs connection frequently and i have to reboot the phone... so this seemed like an interesting alternative.

Sounds more like the typical poor Microsoft bluetooth stack than anything else.
