South African Airways will divert one of its two daily London to Johannesburg flights to Milan for refuelling as a result of the fuel shortage at London's Heathrow airport.

"Passengers on the diverted aircraft who are due to connect onto domestic flights when arriving in Johannesburg will be re-accommodated on later flights," SAA's general manager of flight operations, Captain Colin Jordaan, said in a statement.

SAA's other daily flight to Johannesburg and the third to Cape Town will operate non-stop from London as scheduled. SA221 to Cape Town may be diverted on certain days, he cautioned.

The fuel shortage follows the explosion and subsequent fire at a fuel depot north of London on Sunday. The explosion is being deemed an accident but further investigations are being carried out, Jordaan said.
I can't find any mention of which of the two nightly LHR->JHB flights will be diverted however. It's also ridiculous that the SAA website doesn't even see it fit to include this information on the site.

e-mail received today :-

Effective 15th December 2005, London Heathrow Airport has been put under fuel supply restrictions following the Fuel Depot fire at Hemel Hempstead which resulted in a loss of one third of the total fuel supplied to Heathrow.

SAA is working closely with BAA to ensure that all daily flights to Johannesburg and Cape Town operate with as little disruption as possible. At this time, SAA predict that one flight every evening will be effected by refuelling on route to South Africa, until further notice. All passengers with onward connections will be looked after and re-booked. More information will be given on the day of departure at check in counters and the SAA website will be updated on a daily basis.

SAA actively supports the contingency plans that were developed some time ago by local airline representatives through the Airline Operators Committee, whilst fully respecting the CAA regulations which govern the maximum and minimum amount of fuel aircraft must carry. At this stage, the contingency plans have enabled BAA to stabilise supply and demand for fuel and continue near normal airport operations for the 186,000 passengers that fly to and from Heathrow every day with minor disruption to some passengers and no cancellation of flights.

SAA inform that the lucky diverted flight may be via Lagos and not always Milan!
