Other Middle East and Africa Frequent Flyer Programs - LY strange event--can you explain?

recently an elite member and 5 family members were scheduled to fly to JFK and continue with a connection to another city. the elite one was ticketed LY, full fare; family memebers were code share.

the plane was leaving TLV late, but the family had not been notified and came ontime to TLV. they waited a few hours to check in, and when they did were told there was not a viable connection to their destination. Ticketing changed their flight to a later flight and assigned them a helper/babysitter, who coordinated all the new ticketing details, checking in of luggage then, even escorting them to a waiting van. this took about 2 hours time.

why was a helper provided?--there were no laguage problems, etc.

would some sort of compensation for their troulbe have been expected/appropriate? if so, how would you have gone about it?
