UPDATE ON EL AL'S LUGGAGE POLICY - PIECE SYSTEM TO THE USA AND CANADA

As of January 1, 2006, passengers flying Economy Class will have a 23-kilogram limit on luggage per suitcase (as opposed to 32 kilograms until now), for up to two pieces of luggage per passenger.

There has been no change regarding the policy in the premium Classes.

As part of our efforts to improve service for our loyal customers, we are pleased to announce that Platinum and Gold members will be entitled to two suitcases weighing up to 32 kilograms each. This special benefit is available on EL AL flights operating on EL AL planes (not valid on code share or continuing flights).

Well, that's more than the First Class allowance on flights to Europe! Like it or not, this is a worldwide trend, and I don't think that the previous vast allowances for transatlantic travel will last long on any airline. If you work out the costs they are enormous. In today's competitive environment it just can't last.

Continental and Delta (main competitors on the N. America routes) have this policy running for a while now so LY is jumping on it as well. Nice opportunity to collect money on overweight.
