Australia, New Zealand & the South Pacific - Questions about Sydney Beaches Given Recent News Stories

A few friends of mine are putting on the finishing touches regarding their vacation plans to visit Sydney and beaches along the east coast. However, after hearing the latest news reports about some fights/attacks/riots/ethnic tension they want to know how to adjust plans or what should be avoided.

Any suggestions (given the group of friends come from a diversity of ethnic groups) on which beaches are best to check out and which ones should be avoided?

Thanks

Tell them not to worry too much. By the time they get here things will hopefully have quitened down, and it was only really one beach where there was any trouble and that was Cronulla.

They should have no problems on any of the beaches they choose to go to.

I agree with what Feebster said. This is an isolated incident, albeit a nasty one & only involves southern beach areas (& other areas which are multi-cultural). None of the northern beaches are affected.

I understand your concerns- but we've been to Sydney many times and there was a decidedly different reception for us from people of Mid-eastern descent after the invasion of Iraq. That being said, we've never had any real trouble just the occasional comment. And I agree also- Cronulla Beach is far enough away from the Northern Beaches and the CBD that it shouldn't prove to be an issue- at least I hope not- we leave Monday!

I've been to Cronulla a couple times and never seen any issues at all. Mind you, if you stay to the "touristy" beaches like Bondi and Manly, or even the northern beaches like Palm Beach or Avalon, you should probably be okay.

The "probably be okay" could be a little disconcerting. :D

Thanks everyone; I'll communicate that it's basically going to be fine. I don't know if I'll tell them that they will "probably be okay".

You WILL be okay, trust me, this was an aberration.

The next time those apes decide to trash a suburb, Anglo-Celtic people should look to their ancestors for revenge inspiration.

I suggest sailing a Longship with over 100 axe-wielding Bogans up to Lakemba (bound to be some stormwater drains capable of it) and letting them go a Viking.

Live and work in the area. Absolutely fine as a resident or a tourist. Don't let a minority spoil your trip to sydney. Come to cronulla and enjoy!!! :)

we're getting ready to come to aus in a month, and clipped this from today's sydney morning herald:

"THE Premier, Morris Iemma, has warned the public to stay clear of the beach this weekend, amid "credible threats" of large-scale riots.

As police prepared to mount their biggest operation since the Olympics to end this week's outbreak of racial violence, Mr Iemma yesterday asked Sydneysiders not to visit beaches in eastern suburbs, Cronulla, the Central Coast, Newcastle and Wollongong.

"The police do advise that there are credible threats of large numbers of people wishing to congregate at a range of beachside locations. Based on the credibility of those threats, travel to those areas should be avoided and residents living within the areas ought not to go to those beachside locations," he said.

However, the Mayor of Sutherland Shire, Kevin Schreiber, asked beachgoers to defy Mr Iemma's request and refuse to "cower to these thugs". "I urge honest law-abiding people who want to spend a non-violent day of fun in the sun to make their way to Cronulla and help support those innocent business operators...."

Yeah well there was no one at Cronulla today.....that is, except the police & the media. Personally, I think the media have a lot to answer for. They tell everyone that there will be trouble & run with it for all its worth, call it "racially motivated" when it's really just a pack of idiots. Guess what? There's idiots in every race!

Media beat up.

Safe as houses even as I type this. ^

And Manly and Bondi etc which is where tourists actually GO have always been safer than most USA beaches.

I wouldn't walk along Venice Beach at night for $1000. :p

Oh, give up glossing over it, boys.

Sydney has been a hotbed of ethnically-based criminal activity for more than a decade - and it's only just boiling to the surface now.

People will only take the law into their own hands when those charged with administering justice - in this case the NSW Police and their appallingly incompetent political masters - fail in their duty. "White flight" has been evident for over a decade in Sydney, with the (now) inner-Western suburbs virtually deserted by anyone other than Muslims and the few other demographics too poor or entrenched to move someplace else.

Lebanese Muslim criminals (as opposed to the mercantile Christian Lebanese of Marionite descent - much akin to Italian, Greek and Turkish migrants who actively contribute to the social and economic fabric of the nation) have been running riot, with NSW Police instructed to take an ineffective "softly, softly" approach to dealing with them.

And forget trying to read any religious prejudice into that - those Turks are almost exclusively Muslim.

This is why we have the police seizing petrol and "camoflage clothing" from "white supremacists", while the media can report on large gatherings of Muslim youths "flashing Glock pistols" - with no resulting police action whatsoever.

The only reason the beaches were "as safe as houses" this weekend was because of the VERY well advertised heavy police presence. With mounted police trawling the beach, police roadblocks on all access routes, police launches just beyond the breakers, and a few helicopters overhead, would YOU expect any large-scale trouble on the beach?

Get back to planet Earth.

This has only just begun - expect payback after payback action - from both sides.

Best to avoid anywhere South of the Bridge, full stop.

Oh well that's just lovely, isn't it? :td: Pray, where would one draw the line as one goes further west? Don't go anywhere south of...hmm....Strathfield? What about Parramatta? Should I be afraid to step out of my house? I don't think so.

Oh & I'm not a boy.

Spoken like someone who lives 170klms North of Sydney...ie in Newcastle.

As someone who has lived in both Cronulla and the Western Suburbs of Sydney for 20 and 5 years respectively I can assure you that all of the major tourist beaches along the eastern seaboard are safe-including Cronulla.

Yes we have a small minority of ignorant people who recently managed to get some airtime due largely to an out of control media desperate to sell papers. However it is a minority.. most Australians and in particular Sydney siders are well informed, open and tolerant of their fellow human beings regardless of race, culture or persuasion-we have 50 years of successful multiculturalism to prove it.
