an ad in the South China Morning Post (from Hong Kong) caught my attention yesterday...with the Star Alliance plane being longer than before...8 airlines instead of 6...talking about a special promotion for members registered in Hong Kong...I guess this time not only Rudi feels being sooooo discriminated against... :)

a couple of questions on how you interpret this ad...

when they said, "What's more, whenever you fly with any Star Alliance airline throughout the promotion period, you'll earn extra Frequent Flyer mileage points"...do you think it only applies to the new account that you registered for ?? I guess it doesn't apply to existing members, right ?? otherwise all Star Alliance members registered in Hong Kong are getting all those bonuses...

"Plus, any mileage points you normally receive when you fly on any Star Alliance airline count toward membership status in your selected program."...for this...I guess they didn't make it clear..."normally receive"...so how about fare bonus ?? I guess they just mean actual flight miles though...or anyone knows if Star Alliance are thinking about including fare bonus in elite qualification ??

ok, now come the actual ad...

From January 10th to April 30th, 1999, join any Star Alliance Frequent Flyer program, including Air New Zealand and Ansett Australia, who'll join the Star Alliance network late March 1999. When you take your first Star Alliance flight during this period, you'll receive 5000* bonus mileage points. What's more, whenever you fly with any Star Alliance airline throughout the promotion period, you'll earn extra Frequent Flyer mileage points. No matter which Star Alliance Frequent Flyer program you choose: you'll get: 50% mileage points bonus for Economy Class, 100% for Business Class and 150% for First Class, on top of your normal mileage points. Plus, any mileage points you normally receive when you fly on any Star Alliance airline count toward membership status in your selected program. And you can redeem your mileage points on flights to any of the 700 Star Alliance destinations around the globe. So enroll in any Star Alliance Frequent Flyer program by contacting the relevant airline office today.

Terms and conditions: For members registered in Hong Kong only. Offer applies to Star Alliance operated flights departing or arriving in Hong Kong as well as SAS and Varig flights worldwide. Ansett Australia Global Rewards members flying SAS or Varig will be eligible for this offer as of March 28th only. SAS EuroBonus and Varig Smiles members flying Ansett Australia will be eligible for this offer as of March 28th only. Other terms and conditions apply.

* New members in Air New Zealand's program will receive a first flight bonus of 1,000 Air Points.

My thinking about this ad:

*An early strike against the OneWorld Union
to get Hong Kong travelers to become loyal to the Star airlines as opposed to Quantas, Japan air lines, Korean Air, etc.
*The Asian economy is still weak, which is affecting traveling so the Star Alliance airlines want to tempt travelers to take a trip.
*A good early step towards an eventual worldwide bonus offering (another Star Alliance promotion!)

PS: I feel SOOOO discriminated, to quote RUdi
Martel (because you should never say a quote
without proper attribution!) CATMAN
