BIRMINGHAM, Malta (di-ve news)--December 06, 2005 -- 1200CET-- A British tycoon was taken off an Air Malta flight and held for five hours, for asking an Asian air worker where she was from, the Sun reported on Tuesday.
Multi-millionaire John Marks, 50, was detained in handcuffs following an exchange with a woman at departure gate at Birmingham Airport.
The report said that a Servisair employee, the ground handlings agents for Air Malta felt she was racially abused when she was asked by John Marks her country of origin.
Just after boarding the plane, John Marks was asked to get off by the Maltese cabin crew. Two policemen were waiting outside to arrest him. He was held for five hours in a cell before being released on bail pending further inquiries.
Mr.Marks, managing director of a financial services company told a business colleague travelling to Malta with him that he was being arrested "maybe it's because I'm white".
