KLM Flying Dutchman - Flight cancellation rights from USA?

I was preparing to return ATL-AMS-GLA on 3Dec so checked the KL website to find KL622 listed 'on time departure' that day, well after the inbound aircraft should have left AMS. I also decided to check the ATL airport website for traffic delays to find that KL622 was listed as cancelled!

I called NW to be told that, oh yes - your flight has been cancelled, the KL flight next day is full and you are rebooked next day on NW via every lampost in the Midwest.

Here's the conversation with NW:

Why did nobody call me?
1) Well Sir, you booked thru an agent so it's their job - not true, I booked on KL website
2) Er, OK we had no locator for you as it's a KL ticket - yes, but you have one now
3) Er OK - we have no phone number on file - not true, not only does my booking have a number but my FB record also has one
4) OK - we're sorry. Oh, by the way all the premium economy seats are gone despite your FB Plat status and you can't check in on NW web because KL issued the ticket

Apart from the sheer lack of customer care and non-co-ordination - do I have any compensation rights for the expense of the extra day?

You sure do, if this a KL flight into AMS, the EU rules apply. There are some recent problems with transmitting data from KL to NW, it is conceivable that NW did not have all the data they needed (and honestly, it was not the fault of NW in the first place). I find it strange that KL did not rebook you on the flight next day with a FB Plat card on file. I'd file a claim with KL rather than with NW. Good luck.

In order to get compensation, the question is why the flight was cancelled...and do not expect NW to have your FD data available, frequent flyer information is highly sensitive and not only Swiss and BA could sing a song about it.

However the Swissport team handling the station for KL is simply downright incompetent, I witnessed it multiple times and we also had quite some info about problems in ATL here on FT....
