I am thinking of renting a villa for 1-2 months on Koh Samui - with broadband. I need to be in contact with my work but can spend most of the day enjoying the weather.

I don't think you will have a problem and negotiate when you arrive. There are locals that own villas that they will rent for months at a time. It has been 4 years since I have been but that was how it was back then.

Isuspect the "-with broadband" will be the most difficult thing to find included.

You may already be aware of this, Koh Samui got badly pounded by heavy, heavy rains and high winds last weekend. Bangkok Airways cancelled their flights in/out for at least two days.

That said, you should head over to the Thai Visa forum (http://forum.thaivisa.com/) where you should be able to find the information you seek. There is a Koh Samui sub-forum (http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showforum=30). At least a few members reside there year-round, and I do know there is ADSL there, although I am not sure about the coverage.

Maybe another beach would suit? I hear it is the stormy season for the southern islands. But that is just what I heard from some locals in bangkok.
