Was just announced in the SYD T3 QP that, due to extensive storm activity in BNE, BNE airport has been closed, and extensive delays on flights to and from BNE are expected.
Further information as it comes to hand.
(Glad I am flying to MEL on 459).

Not to mention the lightning and thunder that is around!
Great afternoon to be indoors :)
Seems to be easing off now though.
You're lucky you're not flying on QF435!
QF435 Melbourne 13:00 16:40 Estimated
Wonder what happened there.

I am in BNE QC now at 19:10 local, and my QF 559 to SYD 19:40 departure has only been re scheduled to 19:50. However, quite a number of flights have had 2 - 3 hour delays. The lightning was spectacular a few hours earlier. John. ( Who is enjoying his 5th last day in OZ for 2005.)
We had lots of rain and some spectacular sky shows, and even some hail to the north of the Brisbane, but none lasted very long. I would not have expected much in the way of SYD departure delays. These storms passed in around 10-15 mins each. We had 3 bands of storms this afternoon, passing around 3pm, 4pm and 5pm. The rest could be described as scattered showers in between.
weird...i heard a plane fly over right in the middle of the storm when it was totally crazy.. couldnt see anything though

According to one news report here: http://www.thecouriermail.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,17385201%255E952,00.html
"Brisbane Airport's runway lights shut down for an hour, delaying domestic flights and forcing the diversion of two flights from New Zealand."
That could explain some of the bigger delays. No planes in/no planes out for a while seriously stuffs up the positioning of crew and equipment.

And now a glorious day in BNE this fine Monday.
"Brisbane Airport's runway lights shut down for an hour, delaying domestic flights and forcing the diversion of two flights from New Zealand."
I know one of the electricians responsible for the airport lighting systems, including runways, so will have to ask him all the gory details  .
It's raining cats, dogs, and water up here at the moment.
According to my neighbour's rain gauge, 67mm fell in about an hour at my house (well, his house to be a pedant). I saw a few low-flying jets trying to weave their way around some very nasty storm cells.

the current satellite images show some fairly decent storms making their way across the tasman - seems like a few days away from northern NZ

Well, I was in the middle of it all yesterday...I was at a friend's house in Mango Hill and my car was parked out on the road.
We were sitting under their back patio, watching the storm hitting all around us and I had just estimated that the previous lightening/thunder was around 4 miles away (using the 4 second rule).
Well, the next one was directly above us (no time differential) and we felt and saw threee strikes around the vicinity. Think it either struck the house we were in or next door, as both lost power adn the neighbourhood alarms went off. Friend lost his TV and VCR/DVD from the strike.
Needless to say, the three kids there (2 and 4 year olds) went balistic and I'll admit I felt uneasy (I hate loud noises)...and I'm lucky that I'd been to the bathroom earlier in the day, otherwise I'd have been :o
About 10 minutes later, another strike in the neighbourhood set us all off again and then the hail started. My friend and I went and lashed my car with tarps and rugs whilst being pelted by hailstones. A couple of bruises on my back from some solid hits. Lucky, the car was spared as we got out there in time.
Now I know what happens when God doesn't appreciate us not showing up on time to my friends' parties   ...
Bundy Bear SMS'ed me from SYD and MEL QP's before flights. He said the SYD QP announced that BNE had closed and later, MEL QP was a zoo... which makes sense with that really delayed MEL/BNE flight (as they were probably all in the QP).

I was sound asleep one night last week when a plane went over our house rather low during a storm. It was after 11pm (When does SYD's curfew start?) when it suddenly increased power and then went right over the top of us. I was thinking "oh crap please don't let it crash on us".
It was far louder than planes taking off while I was standing by the fence at the beach on Sydney's main runway. We're about 30km from the runway if it was following their usual flightpath of flying over the Royal National Park and Kurnell.
I think it was the same night that BNE had weather problems - did they suspend Sydney's curfew to clear a backlog?
Ah, no you didn't SMS me thadocta  - I have Bundy Bear's real name and number in my phone and it came up with the SMS. I don't have your number in my phone, so it would have shown just a number (that I wouldn't have known). I remember commenting to Mrs QF WP about who was messaging me....
I deleted them yesterday, so the only way to confirm is to hear from Bundy Bear about whether he sent them.
If it was you, did I SMS you back?? (that might confirm things)

I definitely sent you two, first one ay 16:41, saying that BNE was closed, second one at 19:46 saying the MEL DOM QP was a zoo on Sunday nights.

So what is thadocta doing using Bundy Bear's mobile phone to send text messages to QF WP about the weather in BNE while he is in SYD and MEL?
Hmmm, that sounds like the two messages I received - I think I sent one after your second one. Maybe it was the Codral Cold&Flu tablets that I was taking
Now I'll admit to being totally  because I could have sworn the SMS said it as from him...apologies thadocta.
This afternoon there'll probably be a storm again (looking back from Spring Hill over the City and to the South, storm clouds are building).

i was at sydney airport on sunday night taking a flight to brisbane. Although i flew back on qantas, i took virgin blue to brisbane... It was the first time i had been in such a situation.
My flight was so delayed that instead of reaching brsbane at 7 pm, i only manged to get there at 10pm.
Unfortunately, i didnt have the creature comfort of qantas club which im seriously considering joining despite some reservations.
It really is no joke sitting in the hallway with about 200 people having to wait for delayed flights. I suppose i should be thankful that at least i wasn't on a coolangata flight that was cancelled. It was the last flight from sydney to there .
cheers

That one storm had me sitting on the tarmac in Brisbane for around 40 minutes tonight! No kidding...
The plane landed. But Ground crew were not operating because of the risk of the storm coming back in. Then no bays could fit the aircraft I was on. Then... End up basically sitting in a plane queue for around 40 mins.
The pax were not happy!! QF wouldn't be happy. I believe the plane I was on was set to fly to Syd tonight. Wonder how they would've gone with the curfew?

I was nearly going to post a "Who will be in the SYD T3 QP tonight" thread, and never got around to it. Will have to catch up at some other stage.

Yeah, it was a slow mover and did tend to go a little in circles as it moved through. Some nice hail drops in the southern suburbs. We got lots of heavy rain around 6-7pm. Some great lightning and thunder also  .
But once it moved through, all was clear behind.
Its muggy enough today for another cracker a little later in the day. Let hope all this wet stuff is finding its way to the dams.

We missed it all at our place. Not even a drop today. But again the south saw some liquid sunshine :p .
