What is the best way to get from LAX to the Port of Los Angeles on a Sat late morning? I don't want to spend too much money of a taxi....going on a cruise and need to return the car to LAX.

Public transport (mainly light rail) can get you to downtown Long Beach (assuming that's where the cruise leaves from), but I'm not sure any goes from downtown LB to the port itself...
Try contacting the cruise operator and see what they suggest?

As I posted in the cruise forum, try one of the many shuttle companies. Supershuttle pops to mind, but a google search will turn up many more. Some even have online booking.
And as I posted, please check with your rental car company. Avis, Hertz, and I believe Budget all have port returns. Even if the car costs you a few dollars more per day, you offset that with NOT having to pay for transport to the pier.
Good lucj

Definitely check in with your rental car company for port returns--great tip! I did this last year for our murder mystery cruise and it was well worth the extra $$ for the peace of mind. Good luck!
In the LA area I've had very good luck with Advantage Ground Transportation shuttle service. They're similar to SuperShuttle but provide direct transport (no additional stops looking for additional pax.) www.agtcorp.com

I'd agree that arranging a Long Beach drop-off for the car is probably the most practical. But, if you've rented with a no-name that only has LAX rentals, you may be stuck.
Dead cheapest route is taking the Lot C Shuttle to the Airport Transit terminal, take the Metro Bus 232( LONG BEACH TRANS. MALL) and paying $1.25 + $.25 for a transfer and ride to the end at the transit mall, then transfering to the LONG BEACH PASSPORT C Shuttle (Queen Mary), Which will take you about 2-2.5 hours.
