Las Vegas - Does Harrah's think they're the Bellagio?

I received a promo email from Harrah's, and looked at their rate calendar. It was outrageous. Saturdays in december, probably Vegas' slowest period of the year, are $299 and $399! This is not the first time I've seen their rates really out of whack with the rest of the neighborhood. Does anyone actually pay these rates, or does Harrah's comp most (all?) their rooms. Does anyone have any insight into this?

i am a harrahs diamond player and your thought process is dead on

anyone who plays even a bare minimum of play will almost always be offered the chance to come back (7 days a week) for at least 2-3 days free.

diamond players such as myself recieve multiple free offers to stay all the time including 4 free nights per month at any harrah's casino in vegas

harrah's is also trying to work out the kinks in comparing their rates to their recently purchased partners at what was the ceasars empire

rates fluctuate wildly. super bowl weekend for example the RIO is already sold out (my guess is comped out) but Paris has rooms for as little as $159

the further away you live in general the better the offers. since harrahs now owns the largest percentage of casinos in vegas i would suggest doing whatever you can to get some comps if you travel there frequently. 4 hours of play will usually cover it

if you dont gamble and wont gamble best bet in vegas is to play the priceline or hotwire game or stay at a locals casino like anyone of the station casinos. Sunset station has rooms as nice as harrahs and usually at a 1/3rd of the price. good luck

Brief O/T rant:
Who gave you this information?
Boyd Gaming Inc and the new merged MGM/Manadaly Bay Group both have a much larger share of gaming in Vegas!

The Monte Carlo and the Hotel at Mandaly Bay both are offering great rates with bonus (food credit, 2 for 1 spa) and are worlds apart from that awful Harrahs property.

The Ceasars merger has really made Harrah's a big player in Vegas. To the best of my knowledge, they are the largest gaming organization in the nation.

Vegas properties now include : Harrah's Vegas, Rio, Bally's Las Vegas, Caesars Palace Las Vegas, Flamingo Las Vegas, Paris Las Vegas. They also are completing the acquisition of Imperial Palace in Las Vegas and I am pretty certain they took over the Bourbon Street Casino [which they just closed down]

So, based on the current acquisitions, Harrah's has to be very close the the largest, if NOT the largest in Vegas.

If you want to the the entire portfolio of properties, go to :
https://www.harrahs.com/merger/our_casinos.html

Now, gaming at Harrah's... that is a whole different story...

I do not know, in terms of just Vegas I think I would agree that the new combined MGM/Mandaly has more properties (not to mention both the largest and second largest indivdual hotel properties in the world):

MGM Grand
Mirage
Treasure Island
Mandalay Bay
Bellagio
The Hotel at MB
The Luxor
Excalibur
Monte Carlo
Boardwalk
Circus Circus
New York, New York

Harrah's President Gary Loveman has admitted to media interviewers that his company sends out different offer letters with different terms to groups of Harrah's Entertainment customers in order to do statistical studies to see which offers will generate the most responses. You were the control.

Maybe Gbeer424 meant "largest percentage of casinos in the country".

For someone that lives near a Harrah's property it could be beneficial. By playing at their local Harrah's and also at Harrah's many properties in Vegas they will earn more comps and room offers.

Harrahs is the largest gaming operator in the world, but when it comes to Vegas rooms, MGM has them beat by a mile.

The new MGM Mirage has 11 hotels at 10 casinos and roughly 31% of Vegas' 131,500+ rooms, and with the 4 hotels and 5200 rooms to be added when Project City Center opens around 2009, a little over 42,000 total.

Harrahs has 7 hotels an about 16% of the rooms, with a total of just about 20,500, including the recently acquired Imperial Palace.

Boyd has a lot of properties, 10 by the time it opens South Coast next year, but not a lot of rooms. Only about 8000 after the second tower is completed at South Coast. A third tower could possibly be added there and of course there's all the rumors of a Stardust makeover, but less than half the rooms of Harrahs.

Now that we can put this issue to rest? Lets talk about something thats
more important. The opening of the Hooters Hotel at the old San Remo
in 06. Imagine sitting at the pool with a drink you prefer? Just gazing
around at all the sights not to mention the employees of Hooters
restaurants throughout the organization (employee discount stay)
just relaxing like you are poolside. The last thing you will be thinking
about is Harrah`s, Boyds, MGM/MIRAGE, and the likes. And I live here!
And you can bet your Hooters Wings I`ll be staying at
that property from time to time.

The opening of the Hooters Hotel at the old San Remo

I'm interested in checking it out, but I’m going have a hard time convincing my wife that we should be staying at the Hooters Hotel. ;)

Harrah's has really done a number on Bally's/Paris. They fired almost all of the casino hosts for no apparent reason, which hasn't been good for business in the short run. I just hope they don't wreck Bally's/Paris and Caesars, which they have a knack for doing (e.g. The Rio). Sure, Harrah's does operate profitably, but by running grinder joints. I'd hate to see the casinos I like get wrecked like that.

Unfortunately I have to admit that you are probably right as three favorite (and very classy) dealers at Caesars were let go recently, two were picked up for the new Red Rock and the third is already at Wynn.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what happens. The quality level between even Bally's (not to mention Paris or Caesars) and Harrah's is pretty drastic. The standard rooms at bally's are huge and Harrah's are cramped. And right now you can get to Bally's for $49/night weeknights in Dec., so why even bother with Harrah's?

Speaking of rates, though, I've noticed if you click on "Deals" and then look up Harrah's LV the rates are sometimes much, much better (like hundreds of dollars better) than if you just search in reservations.

Weekends in December (except the 17th) are all busy with something -- Rodeo, Christmas, New Year's -- so that's why you'd see some higher rates. That doesn't mean they can't go a little insane trying to get more than some of the other facilities.

San Remo is already rebranding -- if you go in they've already built a Hooters bar at the front door (as of late October) and the restaurant should be finished up shortly. Still haven't done anything with the staff, as far as I'd seen when we went over and wandered around.
