Hi,

I'm planning to fly CX on DEL-HKG (J) and HKG-NRT (F) next month. This is on one thru ticket. The DEL flight reaches HKG at around 10pm and the first connection for NRT is the next morning at 9am ish. So,

1. Would CX automatically provide hotel accomodation for the forced overnight at HKG? And if so where? (This will be a full-fare J/F class ticket). If I did decide to take a stopover (say 3 nights) in HKG, would the 1st night accomo still be provided in any case?

2. What are the seats and IFE like in J class on DEL-HKG?

3. For HKG-NRT in F, I have a choice of a 330 or a 747. Any recommendations? Both departures are in the morning between around 9-10am IIRC?

4. Does the service on HKG-NRT resemble the long-haul F service in terms of food , amenities etc?

Thanks in advance!

cheers
AJ

For some reason, CX doesn't provide stopover hotel accomodation if you have a J or F ticket. Main reason is that for F/J flights you have a choice in choosing your flights. Besides on some days, you CAN connect from DEL to NRT via HKG without an overnight. But you may always ask. You would need to contact CX reservations and ask for STPC in HKG. This is only for one night. And if you decide that you want to stay longer than that, no, CX will not pay for the first night.

2. What are the seats and IFE like in J class on DEL-HKG?
DEL might be served by the regional business class seats. Could be the old seats. Could be the new. There is no way to tell before each flight. IFE is basic . No AVOD.
3. For HKG-NRT in F, I have a choice of a 330 or a 747. Any recommendations? Both departures are in the morning between around 9-10am IIRC? The 747 is always better as it's direct nonstop and you can always have the Keiseki Japanese meal selection on the CX504 flight.
Note that unless you see that the flight is a 333, which has 3 classes of service, you'd most likely end up on a regional aircraft. But on the 333 if it's nonstop, you'll have the Keisiki Japanese meal on board too. Note that this meal is only available on the nonstop and not on the flight via TPE.
4. Does the service on HKG-NRT resemble the long-haul F service in terms of food , amenities etc?
No PJs, no overnight kits.

Thanks in advance!

cheers
AJ

The experts will be along soon with the definitive anwers ( ;) ), but from experience

1. No idea :)
2. Regional J class (45'' pitch) and tape loop IFE. Adequate but not especially enjoyable for that length of light.
3. Both are nice. 8 seats in the Airbus, 12 in the 747. Rows 1 and 2 on the 747 are a little more private so perhaps go for those.
4. Based on my experience on other Asian F routes - No Krug, no caviar but still an excellent food and wine selection.

My DEL-HKG in May this year was a 330 with old regional J seats. Nothing too special but comfortable enough. The early departure from DEL made choice of hotel near DEL a condsideration.

If you are a "window" person, make absolutely sure you go for an A seat. That is the shady side and your IFE will be looking at the river systems, the Himalays and China. Beats a crappy movie any day. Strangely, other people had the same idea as A seats were taken very early whereas the other side was always available.

With such an early departure, you might have to wake up the security guards so they can check you through!

Thanks guys. :) ^

Swannie, would you compare the CX regional Business seats to OCW (with limited recline) or perhaps GB Club or QF domestic J seats?

Hmmm, I was quite keen to go CX, but if I do have to overnight at own expense at HKG, then might just have to consider the TG option with DEL-BKK in J and a 2 hour connection in BKK connecting to the new TG F on the A340-600 nonstop to NRT.

Hi,
AJ

1.Who cares, I smell a night of drinking and movie swaps coming on. (what no more suites at the intercon?)
2.When I did it earlier this year "regional" J class - others have commented
3.747, just because (I mean come on it's the nose of the plane). Or if you want take the later of the two to allow for hangover time, and to enjoy the lounge.
4.Sadly, I don't know.

.

OCW with limited recline. They are pretty comfortable for 2-4 hours unless it is a redeye in which case they are no fun at all. Still way better than CE ( :D ) and an improvment on most US domestic F seats though. Also better than TG's vile J class to BKK.

Ah well, thanks Swannie. ^ I agree TG's J to BKK is vile! And always chocka-a-block packed. hmmm decisions decisions...
1.Who cares, I smell a night of drinking and movie swaps coming on. Indeed! HKG woudn't be HKG if we didn't do that. :D You'll coordinate arrangements with that Welsh guy then... :p

And P.S.: The suites at the IC still do appear. ;)

yeah, since that worked out so well the first time

PS: it's the free mini bar that is important. There are hotels on HK side as well, you know.

RE: the Delhi flight, anyone know if it is permanently retimed, or is this a seasonal adjustment? This summer it left DEL at around 7am and got to HKG mid afternoon, which is better for connections. (the 3 am arrival into DEL on the trip down, sucked! for my 9 am meeting the next day)
